"This is the first new LEGO set I have built in about 27 years — I made the ‘mistake’ of touching LEGO bricks while helping my godchild build some old sets, and my sleeping LEGO addiction has flared up again. I reckoned the only cure is to buy more sets, and this one looked like a great starting point.
The build starts out pretty basic, although due to my long dark ages period, many of the parts were new to me. It does become really interesting at the end: the way in which the head and arms are constructed is very ingenious. I didn't expect a pneumatic piece in this build.
Some build tips: 1. The two tracks, ‘eyes’, and arms are perfectly symmetrical, therefore it makes sense to build them in parallel instead of sequentially as in the instructions. Just double the part count for every step, and mirror everything. 2. To ensure the tracks roll smoothly without making them wobbly, put a sheet of paper in between the pieces while fitting the wheels to the pins, then pull it out. This leaves a tiny gap and low friction (still, the tracks will only roll on carpets and other rough surfaces, unless one could get hold of those rubber studs as used in the new fortrex).
The end result looks stunning (if not a bit too clean for being Wall•E) and has many options for posing. The current version does not have any of the loose neck problems I've read about in older reviews. It should be relatively easy to build a kind of ‘BnL’ basket to hook up onto the supports at Wall•E's back. With two motors, an IR remote, and a battery pack that fits inside (just), it is possible to turn this into a remote-controlled model.
All in all, this is great value for its price and a must-have for fans of both the movie and LEGO."
