Absolutely awesome
" This was by far the most challenging and fun build I've ever done. Nearly 3000 pieces, tons of functions, super cool look, MASSIVE size. Everything about this truck is better than expected. '
Took me nearly 10 hours to build, other than a few missing pieces, minor stuff that I lucky had in my parts bin, it all went together smoothly.
Instructions were relatively easy to follow with a few exceptions. Mostly due to the colors in the diagrams being too close to one another making the parts hard to distinguish.
All the power functions and pneumatics work exactly as they were supposed to. Theres just so much going on with this thing. The gear boxes are so complex and theres so many different sub structures. Just a great build. Not for the faint of heart.
IMO, this might be the best value of any big Technic kit. Ive got the Mobile Crane MKII to do next. Looks equally as complicated. can't wait. "

Bit of a disappointment
" Just like to start off by saying I was a lego nut as a kid, took a 25 year hiatus and, after getting my daughter a lego set for Christmas this year I just got hooked again. I immediately re-built all my old technic sets from the early 90's. Then, i went out and bought the street bike and the small tracked loader. They were fun but no power functions and not really that challenging. I bought the Arctic Truck and that was what I was looking for. Way more pieces, more challenging build, lots of functions. After I built that I was fully hooked. In the last 2 months I've built the Service Truck, Mercedes Arocs, 24hour race car, and now the Helicopter. Ive got the cargo plane and the mobile crane mkii to build next.
So, after that long diatribe, heres my thoughts on the heli. Its a cool looking vehicle, it was a fun and challenging build with no really issues from that perspective. Everything went together exactly as it was supposed to. Its the finished product thats really not what I was expecting.
All my other builds have had such rich functionality, everything worked and even some things I wouldn't expect to be functional actually were. This heli lists that the elevator and rudders are "moveable". Based on my previous experience I expected them to have a manual control lever somewhere. But in reality, they just move. Boring and not very impressive or technical. Also, the nose wheel moves and rotates but its not steerable. It would have been very easy to add a steering knob somewhere so the wheel isnt just flopping around. Finally, the landing gear is lacking. Yes it moves, but it just hangs there. It needed to have some sort of function, be retractable or at least have a spring somewhere so they don't just flop around.
Other than these few things, its a cool looking kit and it was fun. Worth the $180cdn it costs if you really want it. But if your looking for a real challenge building a vehicle thats truly functional, save up for the arcos or another bigger build.
