Room for improvement but better than expected
" This set was probably one of the least anticipated of the new line not least because of a high price tag, however as a fan of both Rebels and larger starships it was next on my list after the Tydirium. Now having it in my hands I can confidently say that while it won't be the unexpected favourite of the summer wave it is better than I thought it would be.
The minifigure selection is alright, the highlights being the new astromech droid and Sabine with her helmet (although it should have been pink instead of red and her skin tone is still not accurate to how she appears in the show). It's good to get Kallus with hair although I prefer the version from the AT-DP that comes with the helmet. The imperial officer is identical to the one from the TIE Advanced and appears to be representing Commandant Aresko. While it is nice to expand my collection of officers some more it would have been cool to get Taskmaster Grint given him and Aresko are nearly always together in the show. Not much to say on the TIE pilots except there are two of them for the consoles inside the ship.
The assault carrier itself is much better in person than what the images show. Based on the imperial version of the gozanti-class cruiser, it fills a gap in both the rebels and imperial line-up of sets. It's not as large as I expected but is still well proportioned and accurate to the show. The design uses a fantastic mix of SNOT and technic to create a ship that is both functional and looks accurate. There are plenty of play features including a cockpit, missile launchers, rotating cannons with stud shooters, an interior with detail and cargo space, and lastly the TIE fighter carrier and deployment mechanisms which use a clever and compact technic structure built within the wings. There are a few minor cons such as a lack of storage for Kallus's bo-rifle and the flimsy cover over the main interior of the ship that doesn't really sit comfortably. There are also some stickers but not too many and leaving them off shouldn't detract too much from the overall model.
The mini TIE fighters are pretty accurate for their size although the mix of minifigure and micro scale across the set is slightly off-putting but not really avoidable.
Something I've also considered that would have made the set even better would have been the inclusion of the painted TIE fighter from the season one finale. Since the carrier also featured prominently in that episode it would have been a small but awesome addition but ultimately the set doesn't suffer without it.
Overall this is a decent set if you like Rebels or collecting starships. It's a new design not produced by lego before, is well designed in relation to the source material, has plenty of play features, and is a reasonably good size. I would suggest waiting for a sale though as it is a bit on the pricey side and does feel small compared to other similarly-priced sets. While I don't have the other summer sets besides the Tydirium I would recommend that set over this one if you want value and a cooler ship, otherwise if you are considering the assault carrier and wait for a sale you won't be disappointed!
