Pig City Teardown
" Angry Birds line is a weird theme for me. The sets were okay but the minifigures are bizarre. The minifigures are heading towards the Mega Blocks Minions type of figures but retaining the crisp Lego quality. The figures are not bad, in fact they are very movie accurate, but stand out amongst minifigures and mini dolls. Another problem is the articulation: the figures are one complete mold and unlike minifigures do not need to be assembled.
Pig City Teardown is a set that is very reminiscent of the Angry Birds game. The set has 4 figures, 2 builds, has 386 parts and retails for $49.99.
Set:
The build consists of the Pig City and a small catapult for the birds. The catapult is a simple build but has some cool parts. There are 2 1x4 printed tiles used to add texture and a flesh coloured bucket piece to hold a minifigure.
The whole premise of the set is to knock over parts of the Pig City which consists of a hot dog stand, zip line, payphone, chicken coop to hold the eggs, and a dynamite container.
The small pay phone is a nice touch and besides that is trough containing four ice creams. Leading up to the steps is the hot dog stand. The build is good enough to place in a City with a few modifications. The hot dog bun accessory is an fantastic piece and makes the set worth it just for the piece. The stand also has a grill and condiment dispensers.
Joining the coop and the hot dog stand is a ramp containing more of the 1x4 wooden tiles. There are three balloons holding the ramp and when the balloons are hit, the ramp falls down bringing down the person on it.

The chicken coop is actually a decent build. It is enclosed on the sides by the 1x4 picket fence pieces, has a small entrance via a 2x2 yellow flag piece and has a light on top. The inside is spacious and contains 5 of the new egg pieces. The egg mold is another fantastic accessory. On top of the coop, is the mechanism for the zipline and a crank to hold the huge boulder. The zipline is a fun feature and has a set of lights on top and a boulder which holds the trigger to launch the zip line.
The crank is part of another play feature. Holding the crank in place is a small fan which acts as the trigger. When hit, it falls back, activate the boulder which falls down on to the crate of dynamite below. The dynamite then falls over and you would expect an explosion. The dynamite stand has a 2x2 print of TNT which is a nice nod to the game. The tile only appears in this set and the Pig Castle set.
The play features are fun and thoroughly entertaining. The build is cool but the base of the build is mediocre as 8 2x4 bricks are used to hold the whole thing together and give it some height.
Minifigures:
- All Angry Birds are exclusive to their own set which is a cool thing I have never seen before Lego do.
1. Stella: The figure has a pink colour scheme with a plume of feathers on top. Her beak is made out of rubber which is a bit flimsy. Due to the plume, the figure gains extra height compared to other figures.
2. Red: The figure has a determined expression which is not bad but I would have preferred an angrier expression.
3. and 4. The pig are unnamed. One has a open mouthed aaah! face which is really funny and the other has a smug smile. Both are funny and adorable figures.
Overall: The set satisfies the price point and has enough figures for it as well. The parts are what I initially bought the set for like the hot dog bun piece and the egg piece. The build is not good as a displat piece but when taken apart is a treasure of fantastic parts. I bought the set at a 40% discount which more than justified the price for the set. "

Catwoman Catcycle Chase
" The Lego Batman Movie is quickly becoming one of my favorite themes and that is primarily because of the minifigures. The first wave has three sets at the same price point of $24.99. Two of the three sets have a generic security guard and Batman as two of their three minifigures.
The Catwoman Catcycle Chase has the standard of three minifigures, 139 pieces and comes with two builds.
Set:
The Catcycle has been made twice by Lego and both times used the pre-made purple bike body frame. This version however, is a brick built bike. When Lego makes brick-built bikes, they are often out of scale but this bike is actually a pretty cool and slightly accurate design. The whole design is built along the lines of a chopper bike with the front tires raised and the back tires angled far from the seat. Purple parts are used to good effect alongside silver and dark bluish grey parts. The bike is built along a technic frame which connects the front and back tires. There are a few printed parts included in the set. A 2x2 curved slope showing the controls as well as a stylish cat design plus four 1x1 half circle tiles with a nice engine design.
There are also some nice details on the bike including the purple tile used as headlight and a red tile indicating the backlight.
The second build is the small jewellery store for Catwoman to rob. This is another cool build which will be perfect to integrate into a Lego CITY. The whole build is simple stacking of bricks. The foundation of the store has 3 1x4 Masonry bricks which add colour to the build. The store features a window to display the gems and a door with a nice CLOSED sticker. On the top is a nice awning design made with four cheese slope pieces. The sign has a weird cat design which seems a bit ironic. One one side of the store is a sign for a missing cat and a trashcan. The streetlight is a simple but effective build and adds to the build.

Minifigures:
Catwoman: The third alteration of Catwoman features a new and exclusive helmet design with smaller ears and a more rounded shape. It is outlined around the eyes in silver which is a very striking colour against purple. The head underneath has luminous green eyes and a very small mouth. Catowman is wearing a purple jacket with silver stripes down the centre with a cat shaped zipper. The printing continues on to the side with silver outlines. The figure comes with a black whip and a purple utility belt which is a nice recolour.
Batgirl: I missed getting the 2014’s Batgirl and fortunately the Batman Movie set featured her in a very affordable set. The cowl piece like Catwoman’s is new and exclusive and contains a small peg on the back to attach her ponytail piece. This idea is pure genius as the cape does not get damaged which was the case with the 2014’s Batgirl. The cape is the newer fabric which has a reflective shine on one side and a dull look on the other. The torso print has a very sleek bat design along with some silver printing. The printing continues to the arms. The legs have minor printing but are dual molded. The printing on the legs continues to the side as well with boot detailing. The figure comes with a yellow utility belt piece and two yellow batarangs.
Robin: The final minifigure does not disappoint. Robin has been recently an expensive figure so getting him in a cheap set is nice. The figure’s hairpiece is dual molded with his hair and goggles. The face underneath is a useful face to make custom children with flesh tone. The cape is made out of the same material as Batgirl’s but is smaller. The torso has simple details which are similar to the Robin from Jokerland the 1966 Batcave. The legs and arms are dual molded and the legs have some nice details. Robin does not come with any accessories.

Overall:
The set has two great builds and three fantastic minifigures. Two of the figures are common but are fantastic inclusions. The only problem with the set is price. The piece-to-parts ratio is very high which is due to the printed parts and the new molds for the figures. I picked this set up at 20% off which is, in my opinion, a justified price for the set.

Spiderman and Ghost Rider Team-Up
" Ghost Rider is one of my favorite superhero and I was anticipated at the release of the Spiderman Ghost Rider Team Up. Ever since the release of Lego Marvel Super Heroes videogame, I wanted the figure. Ghost Rider is actually a hard minifigure to replicate as a custom since his head is literally on fire. The affordable $24.99 price point makes this set one of the must get sets of Summer 2016. Recently this price point has been the best to get highly desired figures and many exclusive figures so props to Lego for doing it.
The set contains the standard 3 minifigures, 217 pieces (not bad for a licensed set!) and comes with 3 builds and miscellaneous accessories.
Set:
The set is divided into three parts: Ghost Rider's bike, Hobgoblin's glider and the street corner.
The bike is similar to Batman's bike from the Gotham City Cycle Chase and from the Ninjago Ninja Chase set. The build like all Lego sets is very sturdy. The massive wheel at the back allows for easy steering when playing. The flame pieces used were first introduced with the Legends of Chima 2015 set wave and are used to good effect here. The curved design of the part gives the whole bike a sleek, aerodynamic look. The seat section has two fang pieces to represent handlebars which is a nice touch. The sides have the black angled pieces stacked upon each other which give the sides a scaly look. One of the most iconic aspects of the Hellcycle is the skull at the front which Lego has replicated to a PG standard using the new Nexo Knight shield piece in black which provides a decent look. One of the main flaws of the bike are the red pieces used to hold the flames which can be overlooked but do detract from the overall pleasing aesthetic of the bike. Two translucent cones are used to give the illusion that the ground is on fire but come off as being awkward since they look like pylons.
Hobgoblin's glider looks fantastic with the angled down piece at the front to represent a skull with two hors protruding from the top. The purple flag pieces and the spolier piece give the glider a sleek look. The flick fire missile make the build a tad heavy and does not have the sleekness that the glider from the Web Warriors set has but its for added play.
Lego has done many street corner type of builds in smaller sets before but this one is probably the best. The traffic light looks complete with a 2x2 tile to top it off. On the side, there are two newspaper dispensers with the Daily Bugle dispenser (blue one) having a lock where you dispense money. Probably because its a more popular brand! Tiles are used to completely enclose the traffic light and the newspaper boxes to show a sidewalk which is a nice touch. The trash can has a bone and green stalk piece which is okay but seems that it was added to increase the piece count.
Also each newspaper box has two tiles each with identical stickers to show bundles of newspaper which is nice but a few regular printed pieces would have been better.
Minifigures:
The most exciting part of the set
Ghost Rider: The head is merged with the flame piece to be one solid piece which looks fantastic! This design of flaming head is new for this wave and only appears in two sets including this one. The face print is kid-friendly but captures the look of Ghost Rider. His jacket has some nice details like the orange patches of fire but some leg printing would have made the figure even better. His accessory is a flaming chain which is very comic accurate.
Hobgoblin: In the past few years, we have gotten many variants of the Green Goblin so a new type of goblin is a nice change. The orange hood piece and the tattered fabric piece are exclusive to this set in this colour and they look wonderful. The face has a very maniacal design on one side and a You-got-me face on the other. I like this face print a lot and reminds me of Man Bat from 2014's DC superhero line. The torso print is cool and the legs are dual molded albeit the same one as seen on Deathstroke. Hobgoblin's accessory is a really cool printed pumpkin bomb with a flame on top. The pumpkin head piece appeared in the Mighty Micros set and is nice to get again.
Spiderman: the same figure since 2012, there is nothing new except for his cool new web piece. It uses the new 1x1 plate with handle to hold on to the web. The web piece itself is made out of strong but bendable plastic and feels like a very premium part. You can throw the piece on top of Hobgoblin to capture him.
The dreadful Super Jumper is also included but please do not use it.
Overall:
The set is a perfect example of a nice playset. Good selection of figures, good builds and a nice price to satisfy parents and kids alike.

Lightning Pursuit!
" The latest Lego Ninjago wave released on January 1st features the new Hands of Time season. It contains some of the best ninja variants and also the best villains released so far in my opinion. Ninjago is a theme I do not generally collect but the Hands of Time season is very appealing. The second smallest set, Desert Lightning retails for $24.99 and contains 201 pieces. The set has a similar design to last years Ninja Bike Chase which also came with 3 minifigures, 2 bikes and the same price point.

Set:
The set has two builds: Jay's Desert Lightning bike and the Vermillion racer.
The Desert Lightning is a striking mix of dark blue and light blue peppered with yellow studs. The golden blades and katanas are used to good effect, giving the bike an aerodynamic look. The bike has a forward rig to it which looks cool from the side. On each side are trans-blue lightning pieces which were first seen in the 2013's Stone Army sets. The lightning pieces can be folded inwards when not in use.
The Vermillion racer is another cool build using the small tread piece to a very good effect. The whole build is studs on the side construction with space for one Vermillion soldier. The pearl dark grey wings are angled down as well as another wing on the back to give it a nice angled look. The new snake molds look fantastic and are used on the racer to give an intimidated look. Also the copper blades at the front look a bit oversized for the build so I removed them but are good are a nice part recolor.

Minifigures:
Jay: The Hands of Time ninjas are all excellent minifigures and Jay does not disappoint. He comes with a dual coloured hood which was first seen in the Ultra Stealth Raider. The face is the same one seen on last year’s Skybound pirates set but the torso and legs look incredible. The torso has very crisp printing with Jay’s insignia centered in the middle and with black arms to give him a stealthy look. The legs include flecks of gold as well as toe printing. Jay’s accessory is the Hands of Time Slo-Mo blade which is a new piece and has a blend of copper with translucent blue giving it an electrifying look.
Commander Blunkk: Blunkk comes with the new dual molded helmet with translucent orange and pearl dark grey colouring. The face is double sided and looks very scary and snakelike. Most of the villains in the series have a red colour scheme so the orange is a nice change. The armor piece is very cool and I can see it being used for many custom figs and the inverted 1x1 stud at the back is perfect for adding weapons on his back.
His accessory is a dual molded scythe piece which has a nice snake set to the side.
Tannin: Tannin is sort of the soldier of the Vermillion tribe. The figure is exceptionally printed just like all the Hands of Time figures and is good for army builders. He is one of the more common figs appearing in most of the sets. His intricate helmet is actually a very cool mold and I plan on using it in a museum moc.
Other than the figures and the build, you get two regular snakes which is an inclusion in every Hands of Time set.
Overall:
The set has some pretty cool figures and the builds are not disappointing especially Blunkk’s Vermillion racer. The price of $25 is justified but on a sale its even better. I picked this set at 20% off which is the best price to get this set. Three cool figures with exceptional printing, two nice builds and many cool accessories definitely make this set a must get for Ninjago fans or Lego fans in general.

Lego Star Wars: Battle on Takodana
" The initial wave of the Force Awakens Lego set rendered an expensive price point for many memorable and superb sets. These sets included some of the best Star Wars minifigures to come out of Lego in the past 18 years.
The most desired minifig to come out of the new Star Wars line is Kylo Ren. The second wave from Jan 1st, 2016 released the Battle on Takodana which contained Kylo Ren, legendary trooper FN - 2199, Finn and Maz Kanata.
Set:
The build is only 409 parts and for a $74.99 CAD set the price is very steep compared to the parts. The final model looks good as a display piece with very appealing tan, nougat and reddish brown colour scheme. The model has two adjoining segments: the entrance to the castle and the side panel which contains the tree. The entire model is minimized to fit a realistic price point so not all details could be inserted and I appreciate the designers effort. The entrance has a nice banner piece which goes well with the colour scheme but another banner would have been better. The entrance has a sliding door function with a small sticker off to a side for some added play. There is also a small play feature using black studs to launch them and create a flying rubble type of effect. The effort is good but the execution is poor since the pieces tend to fall out from the model. At the back of the model there is not much to look which is due to the piece count.
The adjoining wall segment is also nicely done with a falling tree and bricks feature. The back of the segment has a small crate containing the Luke's lightsaber which is a very nice touch and is reminiscent of the movie.

Minifigures:
1. Kylo Ren: The Kylo Ren version in this set comes with an exclusive face print revealing his face which is fantastic piece to get. You also get his hair piece which transforms him into a different minifigure. Other than that he is the same version that appeared in the Command Shuttle albeit cheaper.
2. Finn: Finn is unchanged from the Millennium Falcon and is still a pretty cool fig to get and like Kylo appears in a cheaper set.
3. Maz Kanata: the second exclusive fig in the set and a fantastic one nonetheless. The head mold is exceptionally well done with crisp lines and tons of paint applications. Usually with head molds, the pain tends to bleed through but Maz is not the case as her head prints are perfect. One of my favourite minifigures out of the Force Awakens.
4. Stormtrooper: nice fig to get and nice to create an army. Like that he comes with a blaster rather than the stud shooter
5. FN-2199: Same as the stormtrooper but with the Z6 Riot Control Baton which is a nice accessory

Overall Summary:
Pros:
Kylo Ren and Finn in a cheaper set
Maz is a fantastic minifig and the head mold is exceptionally well done
The castle has an aesthetically pleasing look with many uncommon brick colours
Luke’s lightsaber is a nice inclusion as a feature
Cons:
FN-2199 is nothing special: the accessory could be remade. The new battle pack includes two of the FN-2199 figures and comes with the shield as well.
Very high price point, should have been between $50 - $60. Maybe without one of the stormtroopers
Stud launching feature is okay and you can easily remove it. However it does waste useful parts.

Battle on Takodana is a set I only purchased on a 40% discount which I felt was justified. This set should only be purchased on sales which it goes on regularly.ma

"Droids in a Can"
" This is my third time purchasing the Droid Escape over the years and the build has dramatically progressed over the years.
The first set 7106 released in 2001, contained the bare essential for droids and their escape: small cylindrical container with 2 figs and retailed for $8.99. The second release was in 2012: 9490 Droid Escape. The set came with 4 figures: 2 exclusive Sandtroopers and the same figs from the last release, C-3PO and R2D2 however in a much more updated look especially C-3PO with the nice gold printing. The price was a huge increase from the previous incarnation, at a $16 increase. The figures were awesome and the build was better than the original yet it was very stable. A good set nonetheless.
The third incarnation is probably the best build of the escape pod out of all the 3 sets. Its bigger, more detailed, and has a roomy cockpit, something that the previous version lacked. Best of all, its extremely sturdy. The interior has a nice way of being revealed with the use of 4 hinge plates that allow smooth opening and closing that will be fun for kids to open and close without having to worry about the set coming apart. For a small build, the set is packed with features including a secret compartment to hide the Deathstar plans. A printed 2x2 black tile with a memorable print! a PRINT!
The use of stickers is necessary on the outside since they add more detail to the build and the stickers on the outside add more depth to the build with the Imperial Star Destroyer visible on one side and the DESTINATION TATOOINE (in Aurebesh) on the other side.
The figure selection is still 4 figures which is consistent with the previous set however we do not get two exclusive Jawas, just the two from the expensive Sandcrawler. The different print is nice but I feel that an exclusive torso for at least one of the Jawas should have been included. C-3PO and R2D2 are different from the 2015 sets with R2D2 having light pink colour for his light instead of red, and C-3PO being the same one from the Sandcrawler but without the oil stain and the silver dial which makes sense.
The main problem is the price. With 4 figures and two almost exclusive figs (just slight variations), this set feels like a $24.99 purchase however the set is at $29.99. I bought this set on sale which is something I recommend if you are not eager to drop $30 + tax for this set.
PROS:
- solid build
- best incarnation of the model yet: Lego fixed all of the mistakes they made with the previous two models
- PRINTED Deathstar Plans tile!!!
- accurate print for R2D2
CONS:
- price
-should have included at least one exclusive Jawa or another exclusive figure probably a Sandtrooper
Final Rating: 4 / 5 "
