Well-executed model. My favorite set. A++
" I have been building with Lego since I was 5 years old (am 35 now). I have not been purchasing sets for many years, in fact it's been since the 2012 since I last purchased, and it was the last R2D2 set. I have loved R2 since I was a kid, and always felt it was the perfect execution of a robot/droid/etc...
Even though I've had hundreds of sets as a kid, many complicated sets from Technic and many random sets all those years, I kind of fell out of the game. Let's be honest, Lego is not cheap, and it's something you have to budget in as an adult. Once I heard about this new R2 unit coming out, I knew I had to have it. I waited in line for an hour at my local Lego store here in Austin and scored one of the last ones on hand on release day.
It was a rainy day here in Austin, so I took it straight home and got to building. I was immediately impressed with the quality of the box, the manual, the pieces (they have changed formulas since I was a kid) and the build itself. Clearly a lot of time and thought went into this - from the design to the "3rd leg" mechanism - and it shows as the final product is truly a showpiece. I had a friend come over, someone who is not a nerd like me, and expected them to give me a hard time; even they were in awe of how nice it came out. I think they are actually purchasing in one too now because of it. Further, I have daily Zoom meetings with new people all the time (I'm in sales) and have strategically placed young R2 in the frame. I have gotten a positive comment from 100% of the people who have been on these meetings. Pretty awesome.
I liked the first R2 build, but this kind of puts it to shame. It's a far better build, slightly more challenging, and aesthetically more pleasing. If you're on the fence, don't be. It's worth the $200 and will likely hold or gain value even after being unboxed/built. Plus, I kind of feel like a kid again (something my wife has been giving me a hard time about all week) as I actually have been "playing" with it. The thing just begs to be put back and forth into it's two main positions and the mechanism to do so, as mentioned, is just so well done. Great job to all involved in this project's design. "
I would recommend this to a friend!
