New skills
" This is an epic set to build. Bag 2 contains 225 instructions all by itself! The classic camp batman series played in re-runs regularly in my childhood and this set captures all of that feel perfectly. It has also got a lot of new tricks that I think will be useful for building facades in my train layout. Whether you're a batman fan or not this is an excellent set to build and is rich with great parts and techniques that have many applications. "

Ever better than expected
" I have wanted this set since its release, but have held off buying it to focus on sets that "better fit" my layout. I knew the boat was wide, but I was surprised by how long it also is! The set overall is great, and even better than I had thought.
The only improvement to the boat hull I'd make is to make the space in the centre easier to fill with below deck details (eg engine room etc). This would make the hull much more flexible (I see the same hull is being continued in 2016, with just a plate over the space).
The set itself is excellent value. Lots of pieces (4x ship windscreen) allow lots of building and rebuilding, and even the wrecked ship can be converted to above the waves use!! While the boat is too big for my layout, I can see lots of the pieces in this set making it into my scenery.
I'm hoping this wide hull might mean that a remake of 7994 harbour won't be too far away... maybe even as a minifig-scale set with Lego's favourite real-world shipping line (my train is lonely!).

SOOOOO Much LEGO!!
" Wow!! This set has so much in it. Yes it is expensive (particularly in Australia) but there is so much to build and it fits in with a number of recent sets as well (Car carrier truck to deliver vehicles to the car lot, Larry the barista to serve at the coffee chain), that I actually think it is still pretty good value for money. I have many plans for this set within my growing layout! Having said that, I'm still glad I had received a $50 voucher to help with the cost. I think this will go down as one of lego's greatest sets and definitely the best of the recent "street corner" sets. "

All about the loco
" I love this train. The "GP" style is one of my favourite train shapes. I was surprised by how long it actually is, it looks more stubby from the pictures, but it is not that much shorter than the Maersk train (of which I also have two). I have bought multiple trains sets in the past, mainly to get more cargo cars, but I think I will buy another of this set just for the Loco. I am starting to build my first full layout and an ore train with two of these at the front fits perfectly into my plan. I like the gantry, though I would rearrange it slightly to allow a vehicle to be loaded and drive straight through. At the moment the control room gets in the way, but I can see several uses for this crane and the techniques in other areas of my layout too. Even the flat bed reminded me of a much loved toy car I had as a child. I look forward to remodelling it slightly to recreate it. My only complaint would be how long it took to come out in shops here in Australia. "

A lot of potential
" This is yet another Lego mining set that I ended up liking a lot more than I thought I would. It's a good option if your budget can't stretch to the larger mine truck. I actually bought this one because the dozer driver looked like a friend who is actually a miner!
As I have the larger mining truck I think I will adapt this one to become a "rumbler", used to create shockwaves for seismic exploration... the front end is very similar to ones I've seen used in central Australia for oil and gas exploration.

Better than expected
" I thought I'd give this a chance, though I thought it might be a little too big to fit with other lego sets. However having just built it I found it is the perfect size to get a sense of scale but also to fit with other lego sets.
I'm now looking forward to buying another two or three and building an open cut mine to run them in. I am really impressed by the City Mining range, and I hope that Lego follow it up with more sets in the future... There are so many ways they go take this sub-theme, including other commodities (iron, cement/stone quarry etc).

Waited for this
" I've wanted to build a "proper" lego mine for years, so I was excited when I heard lego was bringing out a city mining series. I love the details, especially the little train. I didn't think I'd like the tunnelling vehicle but even that has grown on me. I hope they follow up with other mining sets in the future. I'm already thinking about how to integrate it with my red cargo train and the city harbour (I know its a grain loader, but I can adapt it for ore). I look forward to building out the surface infrastructure, with my own processing plants, ventilation shafts and the other things that go on at a mine. "

Nice, but...
" This is a nice train, but not without its drawbacks. Firstly, I believe the locomotive is too long, and I have rebuilt it on a smaller chassis, which I think looks a better proportion. It was a little bit of a challenge, but I made it work.
Second, the train tips at relatively low speed on the standard Lego rail bend. I don't know if it is too top-heavy or it has something to do with the wheels being too far apart. Either way it is far less stable on curve than for example the passenger train.
Third and final on the downside, I don't like the tipper carriage, though the "gravel loader" is pretty good.
On the positive... I like that Lego is expanding the range of locomotives and carriages... to simultaneously run the yellow and red cargo trains is great. Please bring back the separate carriages though.
I also like that this locomotive is red like the passenger train. As it is based on a shunter design I think it would be good to use as such at the terminus yard for my passenger train.
I also like the maintenance train and truck, it has inspired me to put the yellow cargo locomotive on the front and to rebuild as a track maintenance train.
Overall I would recommend buying this set... the positives out weigh the negatives, but only just. However the Australian Dollar price for this set is way too high (as can be said for many sets). "
