"The style of the building does not disappoint, it has charming old world character. When we first seen this building set we bought 2 of them to create one large toy shop with both a front and a back to fit within our Lego train town.
During the build since I was going to make one large building from two sets, there where a number of modifications that I had to do.
First all the buildings in our Lego train town have a summer time setting. That meant we where not going to build any of the winter time items. By doing that it allowed us to use the extra parts in other areas to build one large toy shop.
Second we also did not want two fireplaces in the building so we added a seventh toy shop window to the first floor, next to the chimney wall.
Some of the other changes I made was to use the extra included green plates to make the roof fit a summer time look. Put the clocks on the exterior of the building to make a second floor clock tower. Used the mini figure ski poles as the toy shop sign poles (it gave it a smaller profile that better fit the overall look of the building) Added a light brick to the chimney to light up the toy shop interior, and see all eight of the mini build toys inside on display.
The final build of adding two winter toy shop sets together to make on large summer time Toy shop build, turned out awesome. I would recommend everyone get two sets and build one large building. It really has a great look and feel and fits perfectly near other Creator Expert style buildings. The Final build is just stunning. This is one of my favorite creator sets of all time already."
"I am a fan of the whole modular building creator expert series. I have several of these sets and most of them are fun and challenging to build and look stunning.
The Detective Office finished build fits perfectly in my lego town main street between the Pet Shop and Grand Emporium. The color scheme of the building makes it pop out on the street. The building size is smaller than most of the buildings. However if placed between the right size buildings it looks good. The pool hall side works best next to the Pet Shop because that building itself was small. The Barber shop side works better next to Grand Emporium or Palace Cinema as there roof lines almost match.
The actual build however was a bit of a disappointment. Most of the past buildings had many advance building techniques and made the build enjoyable. The Detective office first off comes with many very small parts. Most are 1x2, and 1x4 bricks that make up this building. All past modulars I built before this one, had way more bigger bricks that also included 1x6, 1x8 and even 1x10’s The Detective office does not have many of these type of bricks and should have.
I felt this building was lacking in many areas. It made it feel unfinished in several areas.
The first floor between the pool hall and the barber shop hall way area. Both store fronts walls are open and do not go up to the ceiling. It would of only needed 10 to 15 more bricks to finish that off. It makes it not look or feel like an official lego expert set.
The stairway next to the barber shop is exposed, there no wall. It would have been better if the stairway work like it did with the pet shop and was enclosed.
Top floor kitchen has you use several 1x1 black round plates to fill out areas that should have used light blue , red brown or medium street gray 1x1 plates. It looks bad and everyone that sees that floor points that out.
For the cost of this set, what is the point of not adding several extra parts to finish it off right? Specially when there always over 30 or more extra parts anyways with all these creator sets.
Lego had a storyline with this building. To me I felt this was to market this set to a younger fan base than the recommend 16+ fan base. I think that might be the reason why this set felt more like building a Creator 3 in 1 than a Creator Expert level set. And maybe why it was missing many challenging build techniques, that past expert sets had.
If your a fan of the modular buildings it still a great building to have. It just not as good as many of the past sets in parts, advance building techniques and overall challenge to build. The Detective Office however still looks stunning and fits in any Lego town."
