"This review is two-part: the first engages my experience with the set, and the second focuses on the set as an alternative to the Friends product line.
This set has been more fun than expected because of the various building instructions included with the set. My daughter likes to take apart the buildings and rebuild the other creations shown in the instruction book. However, it is frustrating having to explain to her that some of the smaller creations cannot be built without dismantling some of the larger creations. For example, the picnic table consists of seven elements: four bricks and three plates, and the three plates are all used for the large Pony Farm. I don't understand why LEGO chose not to include three more plates, one 2x4 and two 2x2s, because the set came with additional bricks.
This set, The Princess Play Castle, and Research Institute are good alternatives to the LEGO Friends product line. Unfortunately, they seem to be the only alternatives to the Friends line. The Friends line implicitly encourages an overtly adult feminized archetype for young girls (i.e., why does every Friends line need a day spa and secret love letters?), whereas the the Pony Farm and The Princess Play Castle are much more age appropriate. Kudos are due, however, to newer Friends product lines that better embrace non-objectionable female aspirations (e.g., jungle rescue veterinarians and the more STEM-centric Elves storyline)."

Accessible Features and Story Opportunities
"This set has numerous smaller accessories that allow for expanded creative applications. The phone, walkie-talkie, and the Joker's bombs are the most popular 'toys' because they are easily utilized across different sets. The fully-enclosed jail cell is also a favorite because of its easy integration with other structures."

Fun Build, Good Creative Outlet
"I was concerned that my daughter would not 'get' this set because she was not familiar with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. She built the set and was able to easily construct a storyline (i.e., black clothes = bad guy; ∴ turtle = good guy). The ramp and entryway are a nice feature because it invites expansion of a larger structure."

Easy Build for Young Ones
"My almost-5 year old daughter largely built this set on her own, only needing help with the cat bed. Dollar-for-dollar, this product is fantastic. The extra bricks make it very easy to expand the 'kingdom' and I appreciate that no boy minifigures are included.
I noticed the balcony/ledge on the front of the castle tends to separate with light pressure; however, as my daughter told me, "It's OK, I can fix it because I made it!" And, well, that's the mission of the enterprise, so "Bravo, LEGO!""

Exciting Introductory Set
"A fun set for younger kids to learn the basics of building. Not too many small parts, so it withstands the rigor of rough play fairly well. Venom's inclusion is helpful because he is an obviously 'bad' character, making story play remarkably easy."

Fun Build and Playability
"My daughter really wanted an Angry Unikitty, so this set was a success without even considering Batman and the MicroManager. The MicroManager is a sturdy, intricate build that has significant playability. I was disappointed that the claws do not articulate and tend to fall out when pressure is applied."

Fun Colors, Great Value
"My young daughter received this set as a gift and she loves it. The set's variety of colors livens the buildings and other creations she makes. Great value and great addition (and we love the winking eyes!)."
