"First I want to say that I think for the price, this set is a GOOD VALUE. I was worried after reading all the reviews about the drop feature not working, which was NOT a problem. Worked great on the first try, and continues to work well.
I did order the motors, so hoping to make it more fun to watch. Right now, it's really hard to turn the crank and watch the ride.
Where this fell short for me? Repetition. I bought this for my daughter (really myself) and she got bored of it after finally finishing the second level. So I took over, and after the 3rd floor (drop tower), I was really hating this set. Needless to say, by the time I got to the 5th floor, I wanted the same exact walls and windows to end.
The roller coaster wasn't as repetitive in my opinoin, as I really just wanted to be done with the house itself.
It is a nice set, and cool to look at, but was not one of my favorite builds due to repetition."
"First, I want to say this is an AMAZING SET and I was waiting for it to launch. I have only been purchasing +$200 large sets and have recently assembled the: Roller Coaster, Disney Castle, Ferris Wheel, Bat Mobile, and now Nintendo.
This was one of the most fun builds as it truly had a mix of many Lego aspects - Technic, Regular Bricks, Small Bricks, etc. I hate when sets are heavily focused towards one vs. the other and have a ton of repetition or little pieces that 'count' towards blocks.
You get quite the bang for the buck, as building the TV and Nintendo are quite different. Repetition is minimal (Except for tv parts), and the mix of large/small pieces is nice.
My first question is - Lego should release new 'wheels' for the TV to change the scene up.. How about bowser castle wheels? Underwater wheels? Could be totally amazing..
InDepth - Instructions 3.5 / 5 - Unlike the Batmobile, the instructions were not very clear where some of the pieces were to be placed (no highlights, etc.). In an all GREY build, I had to look pretty hard on some steps. Also, the manual shows what you're building in each bag, but they didn't line up with what I was actually building!
Set Quality 4.5 / 5 The ONLY reason I gave this a slight ding is because of 2 things: 1) the base of the unit is quite the 'afterthought'. The whole build is heavy duty, well engineered, and then you have this wimpy base that is not even hard connected to the TV, 2) The large square plates (both grey and brown) on the tops of the TV are Matte finish where the rest of the pieces are glossy. They don't match
Innovation 5 / 5 This set truly uses build techniques I never saw before, and really enjoyed building it! There were combinations of pieces loosely dropped in upside down, yet secured by other steps!
OPTIONAL MARIO - 0 / 5 I would give him negative if I could. First, he is totally cool, and such a neat gizmo. However, you have to buy the starter pack for just the Mario. They should offer it separately. In this set, he sits on top (they didn't include pieces to close the gaps with him) and plays the Mario song for 4 seconds and then gives an out of time warning. That's it... That's all he does...... IF you move him out of that spot and into the forward position, he reacts to the color blocks on the spinning tv. However, his animations don't match up (he shows flames while you're not in a spot that flames would ever be). I know this makes no sense, but bottom line, the Mario is a complete WASTE OF TIME.
What a great set, I had fun building and cannot wait to put this one on display!!!"
"I had been waiting a while to get my hands on this set and I guess the fact that it is 3 years old may be the reason it wasn't as much fun as some of the newer sets. The set looked to be very large but wasn't quite as large as I was expecting.
The good - NO missing pieces, and instructions were easy to follow Lots of little 'mini' scenes in the castle Realistic representation of the real castle
The bad - Lots of little pieces. I was expecting to be building something more of a castle instead of all the tiny little pieces and minor tiny details.
Repetitive - They tried to vary this up a bit with some different sides, etc, but it was all the same little pieces that went into each step. I can now build them in my sleep
Unfinished - I feel like all the mini rooms were 'too little' with minimal detail. For an example, the wasted space where the archery set goes is unusable and not easy to see.
Overall my daughter (7) wanted to 'play' with the legos and literally walked away 2 minutes later saying 'it's boring'.
I really love the larger sets, but have to say this is my least favorite thusfar.
My favorites - Bat Mobile Roller Coaster (repetitive, but lots of play) Ferris Wheel."
