LEGO RC Train Tracks - Straight & Curved Rails
LEGO RC Train Tracks - Straight & Curved Rails
Add straight and curved rails to your train track layout -- turn more corners and go even further than before! Includes 8 curved rails and 8 straight rails Tracks do not conduct electricity and therefore are not compatible with LEGO 9V Trains.

Great, But Could Be Better
" Well, you obviously need this if you have your own LEGO Train layout. It does what it's meant to do, but it doesn't seem like enough. I would personally like to see a large variety of track options, like larger turns and shorter track peices, and a 90 degree crossover would be nice.
And for the upteenth time, PACKAGE THE CURVES AND STRAIGHTS SEPERATELY!!! Even the LEGO Duplo Train straights and curve tracks are packaged seperately, and those are for little kids! It is a universal law that you ALWAYS need more straights than curves, and if you have to buy the curves and straights together, it's a waste of money. And plastic, for those environmentalists.
But as is, this product works great for simple layouts. However, as I said above, I would like to see more track varieties, and SEPERATELY PACKAGED straight and curve tracks. "

Great Value
" Everything is pretty much straightforward in the description of the set above. My only problem with this set is the detail in the cab. I think the biggest flaw is that there is NO steering wheel. The only thing in the cab is a "clutch", a seat, and a small red cup. But other than that, this set is really cool, especially for only 20 bucks. "

Not Worth It
" Flexible track was a bad idea from the start. It is ironic that the description says it can "create even more detailed and realistic train layouts!" In my opinion, it does just the opposite.
First of all, this set has 64 pieces of track in it, which adds up to 16 normal track pieces, which is enough to make a full loop. In my layout, I haven't even used half of the flexible track from this set. This would only work if you ONLY had flexible track in your layout. If LEGO is advertising it to make more detailed layouts, they should at least package it smaller.
One major flaw is the performance of trains on it. Because of the holes required to make the track flex, it minimizes the traction trains get. The Emerald Night in reverse will jam on the flexible track, and if your layout is slightly uneven, or if you have a lot of cars, sometimes it won't even start going, and you have to push it to get it started. With the Passenger Train, it will peel out for a long time, sometimes not even budging an inch. It's even worse when you use the flexible track as turn pieces.
Lastly, this track isn't realistic at ALL. It looks atrocious next to the normal RC track. Plus, because of it's "awesome" flexibility, if you use a lot of flexible track in one place, your layout will shift overtime due to trains going over it, Especially if you use the flexible track to make larger turns. This is even worse if your layout is on a wooden table, tile, or other smooth surface.
I think initially LEGO came up with the flexible track so that people could make more sophisticated track layouts. I don't think that making the track flexible was the best idea, though. LEGO could easily solve the problem by making regular RC track, and make track peices that are 1/4 the size of normal track peices, and some larger curve peices as well. That would still allow you to have more sophisticated layouts, and would give you a lot better results than this set. "

Best LEGO Train EVER!
" Of all LEGO Train sets ever made, this one certainly takes the cake. It is the first true steam locomotive set that LEGO has made, now possible with the new large train wheels. Detail is everywhere, from the realistic cab to the dining car interior. Other than a couple of minor flaws, this set is perfect for any LEGO Train fan.
If you are deciding whether or not to get the Power Funtion add-ons, consider the following. You have more detail without the Power Funtions, but very little playability, because it lacks a motor. Not buying the add-ons would be good for stop motion animations, or if you don't have any track and are using the set as just a display piece.
Buying the Power Functions add-ons will give you more playability, but in order to install the motor, you have to take out the firebox, and the XL motor takes up all of the space in the cab. The rechargeable battery box takes up all of the space in the tender, too. And then to top it all off, there is an ugly wire that connects the battery box to the motor. But other than that, LEGO did a really good job at concealing the other Power Functions parts. You get a 7 speed remote, and it really brings the set to life.
It doesn't go as fast as the new Passenger Train, but it can handle a lot more cars if you have extra rolling stock. Avoid derailments, because what mostly happens is that when the train goes off of the track, the motor is under too much friction to move the wheels, causing a fragile gear to come loose, and the gears won't mesh properly. Then you have to go through the careful and tedious procedure of taking the gears out and putting them back in correctly. I have had to do it several times. Another thing that seems to happen is that when in full speed reverse on switches or flexible track, the piston rods will jam, causing a small jerk every once and a while. So just try to avoid going in reverse at full speed. (I don't think real steam engines could go in reverse at full speed anyway.)
The only concern with detail that I have is the primitive pistons. I have seen WAY better detailed pistons, and I think LEGO could have designed the pistons that a bit better. The rod connecting the wheels should have been 1/2 wide like the piston rod, because the full width looks REALLY wierd. The pistons and piston rods alone put the train at a little over 10 studs wide, which looks a lot wider than it should be. One minor concern is the width of the engine versus the tender and coach. Excluding the pistons, the locomotive is on average about 7 wide, whereas the coach and tender are 6 wide, This makes the set look unrealistic from the top.
Other than a couple of minor errors, this set is near perfect. This has set the bar for LEGO Trains, and I hope that LEGO will come out with new steam train sets like the Emerald Night. It really oozes with detail. If you have to chose between this set, the Passenger Train, or Cargo Train, get this set. Even with the extra cost for the power function add-ons, it is totally worth it. Good Train but Lacks Detail
" Overall, this is a pretty good set. The train has a good color scheme, and has a good modern look with lots of curves.
If you own the Emerald Night with power function add-ons, you will be suprised at how fast this train can go. Setting 4 on this train is the same as setting 7 on the Emerald Night. In fact, the train goes so fast that without the last car, it will tip over on longer turns. But don't worry, because as long as you use all three cars, it can make it through any track configuration. The only performance issue is the lack of traction and torque.
On flexible track, sometimes the train will just peel out, not moving at all. This is also the case with extra cars. If you want the train to be able to pull longer trains, my suggestion would be to buy another set, and use the locomotive in that set on the end of the train, and set both trains on the same frequency.
I found this set a little misleading. On the Emerald Night coach, it has doors on the outside as well as on both ends. This train doesn't have ANY doors on it. (The black things sticking out on the ends of the coaches are just windows.) I found it contradictory that this set includes a station. What is the point of a station when there aren't even any doors to get on the train!? Sp the only way to get inside the train is through the roofs, and you can also open the windshields on either ends of the train.
I was a bit disappointed with the detail of this set, but perhaps it makes up for it with the color scheme, modern design, and ultra speed. "
