Only 1/2 happy with this set.
" I feel only half happy with this set. The reason being, I wish this set had been a stand-alone building of the bookshop rather than compromising so much by adding a second building. The compromises are pretty sever, especially for the teal townhouse, which is lacking a bathroom, a kitchen and the basement is more of a crawl space. This is suppose to be a home, but lacks the basic necessities of a house.
The bookshop itself suffers from the same disappointing compromises as the bookshop, but on top of not having a bathroom or a kitchen, the bookshop suffers from a lack of books and bookshelves.
I like how the bookshop exterior building looks and the colors. I also like how the townhouse looks, but I REALLY dislike the teal color. The teal seems to really clash with the warm colors of the bookshop.
The build techniques are fine and the set was enjoyable to build.
I love bookshops, and I got this set because of that love. But I DON'T love this set. I would had loved this set if the designers didn't make any compromises by just sticking to one building, the bookshop. I would had loved to had seen a fully realized bookshop with at least two isles of bookshelves, glass cabinets displaying rare books, a bathroom, and a backroom or office. This set is such a missed opportunity, as I have seen builders who purchased two of these sets to built a full bookshop building. I'm not going to double dip for something the designers should had done in the first place though. "

Blast from the Past!
" This is my favorite stand alone expert modular building. I love the bend of the old 1930's art nouveau architecture with 1950's Americana colors and vibe. The minifigs have a cool diverse selection of characters and I am really glad to see the minifig faces have unique expressions, rather than the bland smiley faces of previous modular sets.
To be honest, I dislike most LEGO cars, but the pink Cadillac does look nice and complements the building.
This set places perfectly on the left side of Assembly Square as both buildings are about the same height and even match at the base, as if they where designed to be next to each other.
This is a gorgeous set for adults to display. I think this set is a bit dated for kids playability unless they are fans of 1950's rock n roll, which I bet is pretty rare now-a-days. I think this would be a perfect build for adult LEGO builders with their older children. "

Hauntingly Beautiful Build!
" I love the look of this model! It is in my opinion the most beautiful building design for an official set. I'm almost tempted to buy a second one, so that I can build it as a normal house. I love the colors and the ingenious techniques that went into the build.
My only grip with this near perfect set is when working with the two motors, USB hub and Powered UP app, is that the teeth of the chain can easily loose their grip with the drop carriage so that the carriage will not make it all the way to the top of the tower. Some days it works perfect, and others its really off. I don't know if room temperature has any play on this or not, because I do not move or mess with this set other than opening it up as it is designed to open like a doll house.
The Powered Up App is wonderful and adds a great soundtrack to this set. Even with its chain flaw, this is by far my favorite set. "

Perfect Summer Build!
" This is a perfect summer time build. The set is ingeniously designed, looks amazing, and although I'm too old to play with this myself, it captures my imagination every time I look at it.
What I think works best about this set, is that it articulates an imaginative story that is not based on any licensed media. The mini-figs are integral to the story of the set which in turns makes this set have a HUGE play-ability factor for children.
Another reason why this set is a home-run, is that it pays homage to us old school fans, by being able to recreate an upgraded pirate ship version of a 1989 set. I'm so thankful that the Lego designers went out of their way to incorporate that set into this fan Idea's concept.
I've read one of the main criticisms of this set is that the island element is rather lacking if you restore the Barracuda to its ship shape condition. My counter argument to that, if the Lego designers did design the island to have a more fuller look to it along with the ship, then the price of the set would be at least 50-75 dollars more, which would not be fair to those of us who like the set in the shipwrecked version.
If a fan wants to build the Barracuda, they can always buy additional pieces and build up the island to fulfill their imagination, without adding cost to the rest of the Lego consumer base.
The price to piece ration for such an ingenious and imaginative set is amazing as it is! "
