Large and Powerful
" I have used this this motor for about a year now in my Emerald Night train.
More than plenty pulling power with the gear ratio assigned to the train.
Only one problem: this great motor reguires a rather large locomotive-body to fit, othervise, FANTASTIC !!
For smaller train builds, you can with great success use the smaller 8883 M-motor.
This motor can pull the Emerald Night with the coach for about 3 hours on a fully charged 8878 rechargable battery box.
So far no problems, I expect this motor to have a long and rewarding play-life for years to come. "

Not enough POWER ??
" After having my Emerald Night for about a year now, I wanted to make a MOC steam locomotive.
The 8882 XL-motor has more than plenty power for trains, but it's a bit bulky and requires a rather large loco body to be built into.
The XL-motor can pull a train for about 3 hours on a fully charged 8878 rechargable battery box.
I bought a brand new 8883 M-motor and mounted it in a wheel and gear setup similar to the Emerald Night.
It runs great for almost 2 hours pulling 2 coaches, but the motor gets very warm.
After cooling for about 15 minutes the motor is ready again.
If used with RC , changing direction and stops will give you about 5 hours of running power on a fully charged 8878.
NOT BAD AT ALL !!
Reading the other reviews of this motor, I'm prepared that I might actually wear this motor out, and change it after a while,
but so far, after running trains for more than 20 hours on this motor, no problems yet.
Plenty power for it's size, and fantastic for trains and other power functions.
The size of this motor makes it perfect for fitting into (smaller) trains.

1 year late review
" I've had this amazing set including the power functions add-on for about a year now.
Definitely a SERIOUS model, working connecting rods and pistons.
The dark green color scheme makes it look VERY BRITISH, or at least very european.
I have made a few mods: extending the technic drive shaft and adding 2 more 12 tooth gears giving power to one more axle.
This makes the engine run more smoothly.
Another mod was changing the wheel technic studs to real 6L axles, othervise the short axle studs might get stuck and roll badly.
The locomotive can even be mounted with the smaller 8883 power functions motor, but it gets rather warm after running the train for more than 1 hour at a time.
On the other hand, that wil give you power to run the train for about 5 hours with the 8878 rechargable battery, where as the large 8882 will run for about 3 hours on a charge.
Another easy mod is covering up the battery box in the tender.
This brilliant locomotive has inspired me and many others to build more realistic steam engines than before.
The coach is beautifully made, but is rather small compared to the the massive locomotive.
I wish lego made and sold separate coaches to upgrade this fantastic set.
There has been good lego train sets made since, including the astonishing Maersk train, but please make more steam locomotives. "

Absolutely Amazing
" When lego came out with the "Santa Fe" that was the beginning of lego trains taking a turn towards (almost) realistic model trains.
The Emerald Night was no exception either, and now the Maersk container train is another eye-pleaser.
Both locomotive, containers, container cars and the truck are fantastic detailed models.
It took a whole evening to put it together because of the MANY bags labeled "1" (for the locomotive).
It was rather difficult to find the parts needed since they are located in many different bags.
Same when putting the containers, container cars and the truck together.
This time, LOTS of bags labeled "2" , and finding pieces for each build was difficult for these units as well.
LOTS OF STICKERS !! .... I really hope lego will PRINT on bricks in the future.
When stickers cover multiple bricks, you can't take the model apart for other builds without damaging the stickers permantly.
My set had 1 part missing. One frame for a set of train (wagon) wheels was missing, and there was 1 EXTRA box/package with 4 axles.
This is actually the first time I have bought a set where count wasn't perfect, luckyly I have spares, and the train was running shortly after.
Power functions 8884 , 88002 and 88000 was added, and the train runs great and looks absolutely astonishing.
This is IMO the best looking lego train produced so far, too bad that you cant instantly add lights to the locomotive as easy as on the 7839.
I hope that lego wil produce an additional set including more containercars WITH containers, and a container forklift.
That would be AVESOME !!

The "Main Knob" for all IR builds
" This unit is brilliant !!
It's not just a reciever, but also a twin controller unit.
It has 2 separate subchannels for each of the 4 main channels.
This way it will control 2 motors or 1 motor and lights on a train, or any two powerfunction units.
As a "train-o-holic" this unit along with the other controls is a MUST for powering and controlling modern lego IR trains.
I wish that lego would make a SET with the necessary items for powering trains:
8884 IR reciever
8879 IR speed remote control
8870 lights
88002 train motor
88000 battery box (or alternately, 8878 rechargable battery box and 8887 charger)
And then give us a reasonable rebate on the whole deal, since we already have bought a train. {;o) "

Very versatile power supply
" In the beginning this fine little battery box wasn't sold separately, but only came in the 7938 and 7939 train sets.
Now it's available by itself, and will be used widely for trains and power functions.
I have 2 of these, one from 7939 and one waiting for my 10219 Maersk train.
The smal size is great, and the on/off switch with green indicator light and polarity switch makes it extremely versatile for just about any lego build needing electric power.
If, and only if you use it a lot, and change batteries constantly, I would recommend the 8878 rechargable battery box.
Even though the 8878 is so much more expensive, it will be cheaper to operate in the long run.
I still use my first 8878 that came with my Emerald night, and it will let you run trains longer on a charge than a 88000 with a fresh set of batteries.

Excellent, expensive, but well worth buying !!
" Fantastic looking engine, could be any modern european electric freight train engine.
Details are good, and the "hidden" on/off battery switch is cleverly made.
The RC works fine even though the reciever is located rather low in the loco body.
Train motor has plenty pulling power for even more rolling stock added to the train,
and it runs for about 2 hours on the 6 small AAA batteries.
However I would recomend getting the 8878 rechargeable battery box.
8878 is VERY expensive, but i have used one since the Emerald Night,
and it will eventually save you batteries and money after a while.
Also the 8878 will keep this train running for 3 to 4 hours.
For more fun, get the 8870 light set, it fits in the loco without modifications.
The tanker and the container cars are made without a train baseplate, VERY COOL.
The car transporter is average but with 2 cool cars, looks like Smartcar and a modern Fiat 500.
2 containers that fit on traincars, and on the trucks trailer.
Well detailed container crane, a bit useless for lifting since cars and containers will spin on the single wire.
Great looking, but medium detailed truck with trailer for containers.
Finally TRACKS, this set contains a good layout for starters, including 2 switck tracks and some of the cool new flexible tracks.
pros: EVERYTHING .... except ....
cons: I really would prefer real traindoors og no traindoors in the loco.
the "flip-front" is better suited for futuristic cars og spacecrafts.
On the other hand, these trainfronts look fantastic as long as they are kept down. {;o)

Finally !!
" After a Loooong wait, the 8879 remote arrived.
I ordered the Night Emerald and power functions set on April 2. 2009.
I recieved the train and extra flex-tracks on June 9. 2009.
Finally the remote arrived on August 14. 2009.
Now the train can be controlled properly !!
4 chanel IR remote with 2 functions per chanel.
Chanel is selected on the orange slide in the middle,
letting you pick chanel 1, 2, 3 or 4.
The chanel number you chose should be the same as
the chanel slide on the 8884 IR reciever brick.
Each function has a jogwheel for power control,
forward or reverse depending on which way you turn the dial.
The Night Emerald use 1 function for lights,
and 1 for motor control.
There is also an emergency stop (red botton)
and a reverse/invert switch (small black slide switch)
Now it's possible to run the train on any of the 4 chanels,
and unlike the 8885 remote, the train maintains speed
and lights when you let go the controls.
Finally it was worth waiting for, and it might be useful
with other power functions because this remote lets your
model maintain speeds when not handeled. {;o)
Now we just wait for more awesome trains to follow the Night Emerald. !!! . {;o) "

Back to basic FUN
" Finally a train with DOORS that open and lots of functions and vehicles.
For those who prefer 9volt trains, it's an easy job to install a 9volt (or even a 12volt) train motor instead.
I still play on the floor with my grand children, and they just love the trains.
Probably the train set that gives you best playability in one set.

Great technology
" This power unit can run my Emerald Night for well over 3hours.
However the price is VERY expensive, but hopefully it will last for a long time, earning it's keep by saving bundles of batteries, and eventually money !!
It's a fine unit, lightweight, packing lots of long lasting power.
While waiting for my 8879 remote, the train motor runs directly on the rechargeable box using the orange regulator and grey on/off switch for running the train.
