TLM: Super Cycle Chase
" Super Cycle Chase (70808) is the first The Lego Movie themed set that I've built. The set includes two vehicles: an orange dragster motorcycle and a black-and-white SWAT police car, and five minifigures: Emmet, Wyldstyle, and three of President Business' minions (Robo SWATs), two of which have the same face but all come with different accessories. My personal favourite of the minifigures is definitely Wyldstyle and she is the reason I chose this particular set. The set also includes a roll-out spike strip which the Robo SWATs can use to try and stop Emmet and Wyldstyle from escaping their capture. And for the average sticker-loving ham-fisted Lego fan there is the bonus feature of 20 stickers (some of which are really really small).
Both vehicles have a very futuristic look and are completely different from, say, Lego City themed vehicles. The police car is a very big and ominous-looking contraption which can house all three Robo SWATs if their weaponry is loaded into the "secret compartment" i.e. trunk (which already has some dynamite in it). If in a hurry, the Robo SWATs can hold on to the two vertical gray bars that are attached to the sides of the police car and blast away with their guns while the car is doing top speed (naturally without breaking the double windscreens). My favorite part of the cop car is probably the four gigantic wheels and their rims - or possibly the two huge air scoops on the hood.
Wyldstyle's orange dragster bike is even more futuristic than the chunky cop car. The front wheel is so unique that one has to see it in real life to believe it can exist. The back wheel consist mostly of Technic parts and the majority of its build time is consumed by linking together 20 black link treads (element id 6047885) that are more commonly used in bulldozers and suchlike. But these parts are the reason why the bike makes such a fun rumbling noise when played with. My favorite part of the bike is the two-tone flames coming out of the exhaust pipes.
However, the review would not be complete without some criticism. The police car is a bit wide for the standard Lego road plates (I suppose this is intentional). The roof of the car is a bit difficult to attach and the car doesn't have opening doors. I also managed to break off one of the rear-wheel mudguards since they are attached to the body by only two studs. The hidden flick-missiles are also better suited for the fingers of a child than those of an adult (which is actually not a surprise or a flaw at all). I also noticed that the mechanism for the roll-out spike strip is slightly unreliable, but this can be rectified by using some manual labor (i.e. a slight push of a finger).
The dragster bike, too, has some parts that are a bit flimsily attached and may detach easily. The parabola pieces (4211512) next to the cockpit are a fine example of this. I, personally, managed to break them off a few times even before I had finished building the bike. The orange 1x4 bricks with bows (right next to the parabola pieces) are only attached to the frame of the bike by one stud. In my opinion, the light sword blade used as the axle for the front wheel is a bit short for the job since it isn't long enough to go through the parabola pieces on the outside of the wheel. I also experienced some trouble trying to get Wyldstyle sitting properly while still holding on to the handlebars of the bike.
Other than these minor points, Super Cycle Chase is a sub-zero cool set for those who are Lego fans and/or are fans of The Lego Movie. "

Auto Transporter
" This set contains 349 pieces, two minifigures and seven stickers. The minifigures are a businessman in a dark blue pinstripe suit that has some nice gold and silver printings on the torso and an auto transporter driver who is wearing sunglasses and is dressed more casually in grey trousers and a blue jacket with printed-on pockets which has a red shirt underneath. I was a bit surprised by the size of the box which contains the Lego pieces: it is so large that the truck and trailer will fit inside, even when fully assembled (yes, I actually tried and made some 'beep, beep' noises while backing the truck into the box).
As other reviewers have pointed out, the most difficult part of the build was to get the light gray ladders properly attached to the dark grey plates and I'm pretty certain the plates in my set are now slightly warped (or gently curved upward). There seems to be some tension in the ladder-plate combination. The second most difficult part was to get the Technic axle-and-pin-connector assemblies attached to the left hand side of the truck and trailer since one has to place the axles on two connector pegs simultaneously. This might be a difficult task for a five-year-old, although the pieces won't break even if they're being bent in a slightly rougher manner.
There are no obvious flaws in the set, but, in my opinion, there should have been some kind of a lever or a console for the minifigure to control and steer the ramps up and down (as in the Service Truck set, 60073). There's also the fact that the trailer doesn't have a kickstand, but the space underneath the trailer is pretty limited for one. I, personally, didn't like that the two convertibles were identical (although not in color) and would have appreciated some variation.
Apart from that, this set will definitely appeal to those who love to build Lego cars and drive them around their Lego City. "

The Lair of Smaug
" 'The Lonely Mountain' is a set of 866 pieces. The set includes five minifigures and the fire-breathing dragon Smaug (a 47 centimeter long beast). The five minifigures are Bilbo Baggins, the dwarves Balin, Dwalin, Fili, and Kili. There are absolutely no capes whatsoever and only five stickers included, which has to be a relief for those with not-so-nimble fingers.
All the minifigures have appeared in other Lego sets: Bilbo, Balin and Dwalin were in 79003 (An Unexpected Gathering), and Fili and Kili were in 79001 (Escape from Mirkwood Spiders). However, all the minifigures have gone to see the tailor and have had a change of clothes. The dwarves have also seen an armorer, since they all have new weapons, too.
The build is divided into six subsections, the first of which includes Bilbo, Dwalin, the mound with hidden treasures in it, and Smaug. The subsections two to four include the parts for building the mining and forging area, while five and six make up the staircase and the throne. There is very little repetition in subsections one to four, but there is some in five and six (since the throne area is pretty much symmetrical).
The play features of this set include a secret door, a staircase trap, a large sliding contraption which consists of a chain pulley and a bucket for gold nuggets, and a massive rotating catapult. There are also several accessories, such as gold nuggets, diamonds, swords, axes, and an anvil. My personal favorites are Smaug, the chain pulley thingamajig and the emerald green ax that Balin carries.
If one is interested in rare pieces, this set has a few, mainly those in pearl gold, but some of the sand green pieces are also hard to come by. The 2x2x2 pearl gold roof tiles and the sand green 2x2 wedges with a 45 degree corner (piece number 6083973) are currently exclusive to this set. Also exclusive to this set (thus far) are the round flat transparent 1x1 Arkenstone and the emerald green ax blades.
I found that the set has only a couple of minuscule flaws: one of the black spikes on Smaug's back (the one that attaches to the dark red 2x2 plate) is not as firmly attached as the rest so it pops off easily; and I managed to get the bucket of the chain pulley thingamajig caught on the second level floor. I also thought that the secret door would not open fully (it kept on snagging on the light grey long flat plate behind it), but I'm glad to say I was wrong. When I completed the second level of that area, the structure straightened out and now the door works perfectly.
I would have given this set a higher rating, but the price is quite high for a set this size. However, I do understand that creating the molds for 'Smaug the Stupendous' can't have been cheap. The set could have done with a few more jewels and some chrome gold pieces, too.
If the price is not an issue, this is an absolutely fantastic set for a Hobbit (and Lego) fan. "

Shopping Mall
" I haven't purchased any of the large Friends sets before, so this is my first one. I bought this set because it was 40% off. It was the exact same price as the Police Station (60047) and I had to choose between the two. This set "Heartlake Shopping Mall" won hands down because it has a broader variety of bricks that I can use for my own creations and also because there's a laptop in the set. A laptop for minifigures! How cool is that?
This is a large set of 1120 pieces. The set includes four mini-doll figures and a white dog (probably a poodle) and, unfortunately for my stubby fingers, 35 stickers (if I've counted them correctly). The color scheme is very bright and differs significantly from the classic Lego sets, for example, those under the Lego City theme.
There is an abundance of play features: a revolving door, a photo booth, a convertible car, a mixing table for a DJ, and a revolving catwalk, just to mention a few. The accessories are also numerous: pizza, two basketballs, a bike, a skateboard, a snowboard, brushes, lipsticks and a flower bouquet, again, just to mention a few. My absolute favorite from the food court are the french fries: a solid yellow rock crystal on a red 1x1 brick. Pure genius!
There are a couple of things worthy of mention if one happens to be a collector of rarish bricks: the very light yellow 1x6x2 arches and the 2x1x3 inverted slopes of the same color are currently found only in two sets of which the Heartlake Shopping Mall is the other. The white sign on top of the bridal shop is currently available only in this set, the other being a retired product (Heartlake Pet Salon). The snowboard is also rare, since it appears only in this set and the minifigure series 3. The coins marked '5' appear only in six Lego Friends sets, including this one. The pearl gold plant leaves are, at the moment, exclusive to this set.
I have only two minor complaints: Emma's hair is too big for the headphones. They just pop off her head as I tried to put them on (I tried both headphones, since the set includes two of them). I'm also a bit bemused by the fact that there are no stairs (or an escalator) in this set. How are the mini-dolls supposed to get to the second floor with no stairs?
The Heartlake Shopping Mall is a great set chock full of accessories and play features for the young Lego enthusiast. "

Mobile Police Unit
" This smallish set of 375 pieces contains three minifigures (two cops and one bad guy) a police truck and a trailer. The color scheme is mainly white with some bright blue trimmings. And for the enjoyment of the sticker-loving Lego fan the set is adorned by 17 stickers.
I was a little surprised that the front end of the truck was built separately and then added to the chassis of the truck, but it works really well and the truck looks quite realistic. I really like the fact that Lego has started to add side-view mirrors to Lego cars, since of my old 1980s Lego cars don't have any. :)
The trailer is jam packed with both play features and accessories, such as a hidden coffee machine, adjustable surveillance screens, a storage compartment, and a break-out-of-jail-by-using-a-crowbar function.
While the Mobile Police Unit is a good looking set with which kids will have tons of fun, I do have a few minor complaints:
Firstly, the yellow chairs are perhaps a bit too close to the screens. I seated one of the police officers in front of the screens and his baseball cap almost touches the screen above him.
Secondly, the wheels of the trailer are attached to the bottom only by four studs each. I managed to break one of the black wheel bearing elements off when handling the trailer, so they might be too flimsily attached for a rough play session.
Thirdly, I was a bit baffled by the two white bricks with horizontal holders inside the trailer since neither of them seemed to have any function. Then I happened to glance at the back of the packing box and found out that they're supposed to be used to hold the flashlight and the walkie-talkie. This is something that could have been included in the instruction booklets.
And finally, some complaints about the particular set I picked from the store shelf: There seems to be something wrong with the bad guy's legs in my set. The ball and chain contraption won't stick to his right leg and has to be placed on the left side. Also, the instruction booklets in my set were quite badly wrinkled. I'm just glad the sticker sheet wasn't affected because warped stickers will eventually peel off on their own.
Otherwise, a very cool set for those who enjoy playing cops and robbers or have an affection for "spy stuff". "

Deep Sea Starter Set
" The Deep Sea Starter Set is a small set of 90 pieces. The set has three minifigures in it, two are male (a deep sea diver and a "regular" diver) while the third is is female (a photographer). The set also includes a grey shark which is almost as tall as two minifigures head-to-toe, a seaweed covered chest full of treasure, and a remotely controlled submarine with bendable arms.
The deep sea diver wears an orange dive suit with nice bright silver printings on the front and back, a light grey deep sea diving helmet which I believe is the same as the one in Lego's Atlantis series. He also carries a red crowbar.
The "regular" divers are dressed in red and black diving suits, which are identical to the diving suit in set 60090 (Deep Sea Scuba Scooter). However, now the male diver has a remote control for his submarine and the female diver has a camera for recording all that's happening below the sea level.
The submarine is larger and more elaborate than in the set 60090. While the color scheme is the same in both submarines, the hands of the larger submarine in this set are attached to the hull differently and are slightly less flexible. In this particular set also the handlebar is different and getting a minifigure attached to it is, in my opinion, more difficult since the handlebar doesn't protrude as much as in the smaller set.
The seaweed covered treasure chest is nice, although I wonder why the lid is a lighter brown than the chest itself. The olive-green plant is attached to a hinge, so it can float and wave in the ocean current. In my opinion, the base plate of the chest could be a bit larger so one could stand a minifigure on it.
The dark grey shark is the reason why I bought this set, since I didn't have one yet. The shark is really nice looking with a snapping jaw. A tip for those who, like myself, are now purchasing their first Lego shark: When one turns the shark upside down there are three round holes in its stomach. One hole is at the base of the shark's tail and is smaller than the two. One can fit this small hole on top of the dark green seaweed that comes with the set and make it look like the shark is floating above the divers. There are also larger round holes under the shark and the one nearer to the tail has a deeper recess inside it. This will also fit on top of the dark green seaweed. "

The Simpsons are Here to Stay
" I managed to purchase all the 16 characters of the new Simpsons minifigure series mostly by using the very effective poke-the-bag method so highly recommended on this site. :) The rest was pure luck. Here's my review of the minifigures:
Bart as Bartman: Has a dark purple mask and a cape, and his regular orange shirt and blue shorts. The slingshot is how I managed to recognize him through the bag.
Edna Krabappel: Dressed in green like she is in the actual tv-program. The skirt gave me some trouble. Accessories include a dark pink coffee mug and a picture of a man in a pink frame.
Professor Frink: Dressed in a white lab coat and dark pink trousers. Carries what I believe is an erlenmeyer flask with a green concoction in it. The flask is how I knew it was Professor Frink in the bag.
Lisa Simpson: My definite favorite. Has a pink dress with some darker pink printings on her. The skirt was a bit of a struggle to get on. I just love Lisa because her accessory is the family cat, Snowball (I or II).
Selma: Dressed in blue with a printed red necklace and earrings. Again, the skirt gave me some trouble. I recognized her because of her large hairdo (which is light purple). Since Selma works at the DMV, her accessory is an eye test chart.
Marge Simpson: Easily recognized because of her tall hairdo. Marge is dressed in orange and has white gloves and some lipstick on her. The skirt was troublesome, again. Her accessories include a flower bouquet (which has been included only in two series 7 minifigures before this) and a dark blue handbag.
Milhouse as Fallout Boy: Wears a blue-green suit with green gloves, a green mask, and a light green cape. Has a Buzz Cola can which is how I recognized him through the plastic bag.
Dr. Hibbert: Has a white doctor's coat and grey trousers on him. His accessory is an x-ray of Homer's head printed on a very light blue 2x2 flat plate.
Comic Book Guy: Dressed in blue and dark red. Has a light green Squishee and an Everyman comic book as his accessories and is most likely recognized through these items.
Groundskeeper Willie: Wears dark green overalls and has a part-rubbery-part-plastic red and brown plunger with him, probably for unblocking some pipes that Bart has tampered with.
Hans Moleman: Dressed in a white shirt, grey tie, and green trousers. Moleman's accessory is his void driving licence, printed on a 1x2 flat plate.
Homer Simpson: Wears his blue Sunday suit with a pink tie and carries what I believe is a box of chocolates printed on a 2x2 flat plate with him.
Waylon Smithers: Dressed in an olive green jacket with a purple bowtie and sand blue trousers. His accessory is a box containing a Malibu Stacy doll. The box consists of a dark pink 2x2 plate and a 2x2 flat plate which is how I knew it was Waylon Smithers in the bag.
Maggie Simpson: Dressed in light blue. Her accessory is the family dog, Santa's Little Helper, which makes her my second favorite after her sister, Lisa.
Patty: Wears a pink dress and has a blue-green printed necklace and earrings on her. The skirt was (again) a bit annoying to put on her. The accessory included in the bag is a blue two-tone handbag.
Martin Prince: Wears a white shirt with a printed collar and pens in the pocket and orange trousers. He's reading a standard brown Lego book by the name of 'Coping with a High IQ'. "

Scuba Scooter
" An affordable set with many great details. I, personally, had to buy this for the large dark red octopus, since I didn't have one in my collection. It definitely did not disappoint.
The diver has very nice printing (some in bright silver) on the back and front his black-and-red upper body, a red helmet, red flippers, a grey air tank, and a transparent light-blue diving mask.
The mainly yellow-and-grey scuba scooter has rotating propellers, two harpoons and bendable arms which the diver can use to explore the sea floor and possibly to poke at the poor octopus. ;) Also included in the set is one light green seaweed-type plant on a tan round plate.
The only tricky part of this set is to get the diver's hand attached to the handlebars of the scooter. The trick is to turn the hands so that the more gently sloping side of the hand is on the outside. It would have been nice if the diver had a two-sided head, a neutral face (or slightly grinning as he has now) and a scared face for when he discovers the octopus. "

Bike Shop and Café
" I've had my eye on the Bike Shop & Café for a while now and last weekend I realized that the set was on sale. A few days later I managed to purchase one. I just had to start building the set the moment I got home, and I wasn't disappointed! What a great set this is!
Firstly, I noticed that the bags were not numbered - which is what I'm used to. The set is not easy for a novice Lego builder like myself and I guess a nine-year-old might struggle with some parts of the build, too, especially finding the right bricks from the heap of 1023 pieces.
Secondly, I noticed the vast number of windows and doors included in the set - the frames alone come in three different colors! What an opportunity to pilfer both the windows and doors from this set and create one's own building!
Thirdly, I noticed the roof tiles (dark blue and dark red) which are quite rare. Actually, the dark red 2 x 2 x 2 roof tiles are currently available only in this particular set.
The set includes three minifigures (two men and a woman) and a number of mini-builds (a car, a bird, a barbecue, and a bed, just to mention a few) which are really fun to put together. There are two instruction booklets for the Bike Shop & Café, and two more for the alternative buildings one can complete using the same bricks. If one follows the instructions to a tee, the first booklet is for the bike shop (including the yellow car) and the second booklet is for the café. The play features of the set are numerous, my personal favorite is probably the ATM / cash point.
When completed, the set looks simply spectacular, both opened up and closed down. Both of the buildings have highly detailed facades and backyards and I think the Bike Shop & Café would look great even when placed among the more expensive modular buildings (such as the Pet Shop or Palace Cinema). In my opinion, only the scale is smaller, the details of the buildings are nearly equal to those in the modular series. As some reviewers have pointed out, this set would certainly be a good buy for a child (or an adult!) who wants to gather more experience before starting the expert level builds.
The only complaints I have about this set are few and insignificant. Firstly, I never seem to get the rear wheel of the standard Lego bicycle in place without breaking out in sweat. Is there a trick to attaching the rear wheel to the bicycle frame? I'd be glad to hear it if there was. Secondly, I can't get the café section of the build to close as tightly as the bike shop does. Thirdly, the coffee machine covers up half of two of the café's windows which looks a bit quirky. Fourthly, I must be a simpleton because I seem to have an extra dark red 1x2 plate (which I shouldn't have) and I can't figure out where I've made the mistake of leaving it out! Please, send me a new brain asap! "

Spiders of Mirkwood
" I quite recently purchased this set although it has been unavailable for months now and now I've finally built it.
It took a surprisingly long time to complete such a small set (only 298 pieces), but the building of the two identical spiders took longer than I imagined. Their legs were slightly tedious to put together but the end product is great. The spiders will fit in quite nicely with Shelob from set 9470.
There are four minifigures (Fili, Kili, Tauriel, and Legolas) included in the set, which is a good amount for a set this size. All of them have two-sided faces, so with three of the minifigures you can choose between an angry expression or a neutral expression. Fili has a smiling face and an angry face. As many have remarked, Bilbo definitely should have been included in this set.
The play features of this set include a tree tipping function and a spider attack function which is a slightly tight fit. You can also trap the dwarves in spider web bags and have them hanging off the tree with the tipping function which in turn is used to rescue the dwarves. The other tree (or rather a stump) with a bow hanging from it is a bit superfluous in my opinion since it has no functions except to maybe add to the piece count. "
