Rekindling interest
" I’m 36 and I like to describe myself as a life-long LEGO fan but there has been a long stretch of my life after I moved out of my parent’s house when I barely had any LEGO where I lived.
Until this Ford Mustang set.
Even without actively buying or building LEGOs, I couldn’t really escape LEGO marketing, not in New York where there are two separate LEGO stores. I’ve seen some creator cars sets but until this one, none had caught my attention enough to warrant a purchase.
Either the models weren’t true enough to the real world inspiration, or I was just not interested in the real world inspiration. But this set was the perfect intersection of a nice rendition of a car I am interested in. The working steering was just the icing on an already very appetizing cake and made me decide on the purchase in May 2019.
I don’t remember the build experience itself, but I know it’s been sitting prominently on my successive shelves ever since, with and without the add-ons.
I knocked a point off playability because even with working steering and adjustable rear ride height, it still is a display set at heart.
And a fine one at that. "

Missing all the marks
" I would like to first state that I didn't initially intend on purchasing this set. It looked uninteresting to me, especially at this price point, but I found a garbage truck MOC (My Own Creation, an unofficial set) that only uses parts from this set. And since Technic garbage truck sets are rare, I opted for this set as a donor over the 42078 Mack Anthem B-Model for aesthetics reasons since the price was similar.
I decided to first go with the intended build since the MOC doesn't use the parts of the blue car. Additionally, I've always enjoyed Technic sets and, even though I wasn't initially interested in it, I was curious about the official build.
Boy was I wrong.
I started in order with the blue car. The build was enjoyable enough, I feel like the steering wheel could have been connected to the Hand of God steering but I remember this set isn't about the car.
The next day I started to build the truck, and immediately something felt off to me. The engine, transmission and rear axle assembly where very similar to the blue car. I'm guessing the blue car was designed after the truck and inherited some of its technical concepts. But because of the order of the instructions, when I started the truck which is supposed to be the main course, I had an instant feeling of déjà-vu, which actually set the tone for the rest of the build as I later found out.
The new (for me) long gear rack and housing was a nice discovery, but after that the build started being tedious and pretty much never stopped. Ramps were dreadful to build because of their sheer number, size and proportion. Connecting several pins along a thin 30+ studs long assembly was nerve-wracking and ultimately provided very little satisfaction because there were several more to do.
The next day, the trailer was at first more interesting to build because there were some new mechanisms (connecting ramps on the front and back) but ultimately it became more of the same as the truck, so I spent most of the build wishing for it to end fast, which it didn't because of the overall large number of parts.
Side note, I didn't want to use most of the stickers, even on the car that will not be disassembled.
The only good point I will concede to this set is that, once built, it was a fantastic toy for my 6-year old kid. But at a 12+ age rating and a hefty price point without really being a displayable model, I feel like it's missing all the marks. "

Engineered to a fault
" It is the first time I've bought a "realistic" Technic set and I didn't even bought it for this reason. Granted, I feel like it does look much closer to the actual car it is modeled from than the Bugatti Chiron set, but I was more interested about the working V12 engine, the gearbox and the 4 wheel drive features.
LEGO Technic always has had that magical feel where it actually works and you can see how it works. Exposed gears, levers, belts and pneumatic tubes, that's what I like about Technic sets. So the well-known issue with the different shades of green that I also experienced didn't bother me too much in that regard.
However, the attention to detail for the body works on this set, including intricate parts flimsily holding on to the sturdy chassis, hides most of the marvel of engineering it took to cram the sequential gearbox, the 4 wheel drive and the shift lever (forward, neutral, reverse) in such a limited space.
Due to conflicting schedules with my co-builder, this set stayed for a long while at the chassis stage, and I kinda regret that time where most of the mechanical parts weren't entirely covered by beauty elements that feel almost unnatural on a Technic set for me.
In the end, it still is an impressive display piece, but it is a little disappointing to me that the most interesting parts of the design are almost completely hidden. "
