Almost Great
" Let me start off by saying I think the A-Wing is my favorite starfighter of the Star Wars universe, so my expectations may be unrealistically high. When I saw previews of this kit a while back, I was absolutely ECSTATIC!
The color combination, small details, "fin" design towards the rear, minifigs, and deployable landing gear got me super hyped for this kit. I'm not one who typically minds stickers, particularly on a lower cost kit like this (sure, on a $200 UCS kit I might be a bit more upset). On a passing glance, this kit was definitely one I knew I needed to add.
The reason for the somewhat critical review is for two particular aspects on the build that aren't immediately obvious until actually digging into the kit.
The first, and most glaring to me, is the complete lack of cockpit controls. There is zip. None. Zero. How anyone flies this thing is a mystery to me, and as a stickler for small interior details (like most Lego fans are), it would have been pretty much necessary to have some kind of controls for me to fully recommend this build. Even one small flat piece with generic button controls or a lever piece would have sufficed for a build of this many pieces, but instead I can only surmise this A-wing is flown via mind control.
The other, smaller nitpick, for me is that the rear, opaque portion of the cockpit body does not fully come up to enclose the cockpit; it is one flat 1x4 short of fully enclosing the canopy. Again, a small nit pick, but I know a lot of folks are sticklers like me so it seemed worth mentioning.
Overall, I like the kit but there definitely seems to have been two, and this is the only way I can think to describe it, sloppy mistakes in the design of the build. No cockpit controls seems lazy, and not fully enclosing the back of the canopy seems to have just been missed.
If those things matter to you, buy it only if you have the means to fix them. If those couple of things don't bug you, then go wild.
Certainly a good build but definitely marred for me by one rather glaring omission and one smaller mistake. "
