Nice vehicle but terrible control system
" A little disappointing. I got this partly because my Nephews enjoy Lego when they visit, but I am unable to let them play with this.
The only method of control is the app. I have an old Android phone, which I blanked, which was ideal to let them play with it. But it is Android 5 (not even that old). All other Lego apps work, but not Technic. This one is Android 6 only. I am not giving them my current phone, and not buying a new one purely for this. So they can't play with it. Highly irritated.
As has been pointed out on other reviews, the app is not a fun way of controlling an RC car anyway. The one touch thing is boring. The standard RC style remote is better, but with no tactile feedback on a smooth screen, its hopeless.
My Nephew also wants a servo motor to learn how to install steering in his own creations. I cannot recommend this kit as a way to get one, because he can't use the app to control his own creations (and his parents haven't bought a phone for him yet and don't want to yet). It only has availability for the Lego models ONLY. You can't create something of your own with these motors. That's ridiculous. Surely that's the whole point of Lego. Didn't the feature film even use this as the storyline?
We NEED a bluetooth control box that we can use with these sorts of motors with proper physical controls! Lego, get it sorted. Please!
The rest of the model is OK. The motors aren't really strong enough to climb over objects like a rock crawler. The wheels just stall, which is a shame. There is an easy fix - there are two drive cogs on each axle. Reverse these and the gearing is lowered so it can be used as a rock crawler, and it can climb over books and objects up to about 60mm tall. Much more fun to build things for it to get over. It is a bit slow, but more entertaining to see it really climb.
Would have been a good option to put into the instructions. And to have built the model so it was easier to swap over. There is a fair bit of disasembly needed to do the mod.
Rear suspension is also too stiffly spring. It doesn't match the front. This is a future mod, but it needs some more pieces to effect that change.
Close, but not great. And desperately, desperately wants a physical controller. "
