Hindered Play Value, Cost Doesn't Add Up
" I wrote in another review that the new City sets continue to disappointing trend of the recent City Square -- not enough substance for the cost and it continues here but not as bad as the other two main sets recently released. This concept on this build is fun and had a lot of promise but this is barely a third of a house for $79.95 CDN. I'd expect at least 500 bricks for $80 but all we get is 388; that's poor value. This is advertised as a house but it's probably about a quarter and the rooms inside are very, very narrow which significantly hinders the play value for kids like my 8-year-old son, and two daughters (10 and 5). There are so many cool but wasted features inside the house -- you mostly have to play around it on the outside. When my kids build their own houses, they always build full houses with complete rooms and furnishings but will only build up the walls halfway. That is the same way my sister and I did it as kids when we played with our bricks. Lego is missing the boat here when skimping on the builds by cutting off rooms -- that's what the kids need/want and it's the walls and roofs that are less important even if it's less aesthetically pleasing to AFOLs. I get that Lego is trying to appease kids and the adult collectors but the City sets are starting to fail at both. "

Another City Disappointment
" The new City sets, unfortunately, follow the same failings that the recent Town Square set had -- not enough substance for the value. This set has no buildings -- just narrow facades (that seem to get narrower and narrower each year). There is little play value with something this superficial. The shops here don't even add up to a small building we might pay $49.94 CDN for (thinking #31105). It's at best half of that... bringing the value in at about $25. Then we have two $12-$15 vehicles included. Each vehicle on its own would come with one Minifigure, and a $49.95 building would likely come with two Minifigures. That leaves us with two extra Minifigures valued at $4-$5 each sold on their own. Add it all together and it's about $65 in value. So there is $34.99 in excess value which I guess are going towards the new street baseplates which are getting mixed reactions. "

Great Set
" This is the best set we've gotten recently. Both my eight-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter have enjoyed playing together when joining it to other sets they've made. The tow truck is different from any other vehicles we have and the used car salesman element is fun. The shop itself is simple but fun because it's a full building rather than the (cheap) half-buildings that have become common in Lego City sets. The moving elements on the building's roof that carry the car engine around are also a nice feature. It's perhaps $20-$30 more expensive than it really should be for what you get. "

Disappointing Start to Finish
" I was really excited for this build but my eight-year-old son stole it from me and I let him build it. I later took it apart and rebuilt it and quickly lost interest. It's repetitive and the house doesn't really encompass key parts of the show (except the very, very, very small bedroom. The garage or Will's hideout would have been a nice addition. And even worse, the whole set is very unsteady on the trees. It got to the point where I took the two houses off the trees and gave them to my kids to play with -- it's the only way it had any play value. Before that, it sat on a shelf which is fine if all you're looking for is a display model. The minifigures are great and the truck is also nice but the rooms are small and the roof is very low so it really hurts the play value. It does matches up nicely with the Ghostbusters Fire Hall, Haunted House, and Hidden Side sets for a haunted area theme. "

Challenging Build, Disappointing Play
" My eight-year-old son was able to build this castle in three days with only a little help to push down tough pieces but he's an advanced builder for his age. The set is excellent in terms of build value but takes a huge hit in the play value which is disappointing. The castle is pretty brittle and pieces break off easily when playing. And forget about trying to move it. The play areas are also relatively small and cramped. I have three kids, a boy (8) and two girls (10 and 5), and none of them have shown much interest in playing with it since it was built because of the issues above. "
