Fun but had trouble getting it to trigger
" Like all the suits, the biggest draw is really just changing Mario's outfit.
I have all the suits and none of them bring anything really exciting to the table in terms of interactivity.
With this suit, you make Mario fly around and it makes the sound effects to match, it works pretty well to avoid certain obstacles, so as a power-up actually we quite liked it because it works thematically.
Though for us, we really are having trouble to get it to consistently trigger the motion to make Mario start flying. It's a bit hit and miss but could be user error :)
Still I think largely they're just about the appearance and that part is nice. I like the added flourish of giving each suit a little platform to sit on, looks great in a row but also lets you add it easily to a course, to actually "power up" during play. You can "hop" Mario in to change suits, a nice little detail. "

The best of the suits!
" Like all the suits, the biggest draw is really just changing Mario's outfit.
I have all the suits and none of them bring anything really exciting to the table in terms of interactivity.
With this suit, you make Mario stomp by doing a big jumping motion, which plays a great sound effect and nets you coins. Even though it's quite simple, this one actually has proven to be the most fun and interactive of the suits. Also a hammer icon appears on his stomach.
Still I think largely they're just about the appearance and that part is nice. I like the added flourish of giving each suit a little platform to sit on, looks great in a row but also lets you add it easily to a course, to actually "power up" during play. Everybody loves cats!
" Like all the suits, the biggest draw is really just changing Mario's outfit.
I have all the suits and none of them bring anything really exciting to the table in terms of interactivity.
With this suit, you can climb any surface in a rocking motion (wall, door etc) and a sound effect plays. Also a bell mushroom appears on Mario's stomach.
The down side (or up side if you're really creative) of this one being the interaction is not actually at all with the Lego

Nice appearance but effects are very tame
" Like all the suits, the biggest draw is really just changing Mario's outfit.
I have all the suits and none of them bring anything really exciting to the table in terms of interactivity.
With this suit, you dip Mario as if he's picking something off the ground and he will make the sound of a fire ball. Also a Fire Flower appears on his stomach.

If you can only get one expansion, this is it.
" This is the #1 expansion I'd recommend to any one jumping in to Mario Lego.
It's a perfect replication of this enemy and setting, just really nails it out of the park and gives you a real taste of how good the series as a whole can be.
The mechanic is great fun, easily the most played with part of our current course. Lots of small bonuses like new music and sound effects.
The build is solid and Mario sits snuggly in his little hammer swing, which moves easily and holds up to repeated abuse knocking those Pokey pieces over and over again.
Pokey is easy to rebuild, a handy guide rail keeps him straight, you just plop the individuals bits down the rail and start whacking.
And the best part it's in the cheapest expansion tier! Well worth the money. It's so good, we're considering getting another to make a double Pokey obstacle! "

Hands down my favourite series ever.
" I instantly fell in love with this set for one simple reason. It features enemies that so very very rarely get any limelight in any Mario merchandise at all.
When you always get the classics, it was just so immediately refreshing to see this colourful cast of the lesser known characters!
Of course they added a couple regulars, Bob-omb, Bullet Bill and Goomba (but hey, at least it's a Paragoomba)
Who'd have ever thought you'd get to build an Eep-Cheep or an Urchin!
The builds themselves are great, for $5 (most places), you get a neat mini-fig and a new sticker for Mario to jump on. Some of these comes with unique sound effects that are great fun.
But also, these are special in the Mario series in that they stand by themselves. They make great display pieces.
Can't wait for series 2! I hope they keep it as varied as series 1. Please try and work out how to make a Kuribo's Shoe Goomba :) "

Really rounds out a fire area!
" Loved this set, I think it's a really great addition when you consider it as what it is! An expansion!
It bundles really nicely with the starter course, it gives you that "mini-boss" effect with the Thowmp before Baby Bowser.
The interactivity is largely the balancing beam, which is made difficult by being over eager, teaches a nice lesson to be careful and patient, which makes the challenge trivial.
We found the green shell mechanic a bit average, you really need to connect that tile strongly to things around it or the movement will frequently cause the platform to come loose. Kind of strange since in Pokey's, a much more aggressive hammer mechanic works a charm, they largely are built on the same turning pieces?
Thowmp is as simple as he is in the games haha, it'd be great if they could work out a delayed mechanic for a future set where you have to "dodge" a falling Thowmp. But we still liked him quite a lot and the reward underneath is a nice surprise with the feedback Mario gives. He's also just a got a great visual presence.
Given this is a cheaper set and you can find it quite cheap indeed, I really think it's a no-brainer addition for everyone. "

Ok start but needs expansions to shine
" I give the Mario a 5/5, he's really great and I personally found him to have just the right level of interactivity vs using your imagination. I really wouldn't want him any more advanced, he really just adds a bit of sound and feedback to actions.
Finding out how he's going to react to various stickers is a huge hit (4yr old). Absolutely loves it and feverishly checks Marios stomach to see "FIRE!", "GRASS!", "A MUSHROOOOOOM!". A lot of laughs have been had and a week on, there's still plenty of requests to have another turn.
Note you do not need the iPad at all once the build is over, it's really just some flourish. While I actually think the digital instructions are excellent, the steps are easier to follow and the ability to highlight just new pieces (with rotation) makes even more complex builds, easier for young ones.
I do ultimately agree with other parents, it's not good to only have the digital. It limits the parents choice in what sort of play you can offer. I would settle for a balance, at least offer us the instructions for home printing if we so choose.
The starter course is as suggested, a starter. Unfortunately it's just rather dull and might give people a bad first impression of what you can expect from the rest of the series.
I wonder if it would not have been better to just sell Mario with the Pipe and Flag, then just let people build the courses a la carte from the various expansions.
In the end, despite the overall 3/5, the set is a necessity and does the job. It's ok but just a strange intro choice.
I would highly recommend the addition of the two cheaper expansions, Pokey's Desert and Thowmps Lava Trouble. When you put these with the starter, then you're talking a 5/5 experience :)
We're very excited to try out the mid-range expansions and one day to splurge on Bowsers Castle!
The series as a whole is a 5/5 for us, just a really wonderful and fun bunch of sets. "

The best fun I've had with LEGO to date
" As a casual LEGO fan, I just found this set to be an absolute blast.
The detail level is incredible and while I'm sure seasoned LEGO fans have seen it all before, I found the functioning cartridge slot to be just brilliant. I couldn't stop just clicking it down and clicking it up, the little mechanism is genius!
I can safely say I've never before so closely examined exactly how a build came together and how it all ticks. This is but one example, this build is full of such experiences.
Also the value while initially might be shocking to us casual fans, it's definitely worth it, You'll be equally shocked at the massive box dropped in front of your door :)
As for build challenge, I did find it a bit difficult. You certainly have to pay more attention to the positioning of blocks, I made a handful of "off by one peg" errors, that had me back tracking a decent build up on top. So it's not very forgiving in that regard.
I did initially intend to build this with my son (aged 4) but this is just far too complicated and the pace is far too slow to hold attention. He however did enjoy unboxing it, as the bags just kept on coming. The final build is also extremely durable, there has been no issue at all letting him play with it. "
