Inspiring adventures
" Series 19 is a nice set with a little something for everyone, and I've been picking them up randomly and letting the figures inspire trips to new or interesting places. The mountain biker has gotten my wife and I out to some new parks, trails, and farmers' markets, and the mummy got me out to a museum with some friends. They're great for inspiring pictures and also mini-builds related to their themes. One little thing, though, is that some of the figures seem short on accessories. I like the mummy, but she doesn't feel like a $5 figure. "

A great set to hit the road with!
" All three builds included in this set are interesting for different reasons, and it was enjoyable to go through the building experience of each. The main build, the camper van, uses up all the pieces in a nice balance of symmetrical and asymmetrical building to produce a highly interactive vehicle that also looks good and has a nice scale. The beach buggy uses only about half of the pieces and is not really interactive, but it does look great and is perfect for taking pictures. The lifeguard tower build feels odd at times (it’s quite a challenge to change vehicle pieces into a building/environment!), but it makes creative use of some pieces to produce a build that allows a completely different play experience and interaction with other water-themed sets. There is just a lot to do with this set and it will probably appeal to a broad range of builders.
The main build, the van, has a lot of little details that you can detach/open and interact with, but the set really shines when you’ve got it in an environment, so it’s a great one to bring with you on vacation. I was able to get some really fantastic pictures with it at the beach. There are also plenty of pieces so you can have fun customizing the smaller builds or coming up with your own new creations. The lifeguard tower build goes well with other beach/water themed sets from the City line.
The main build takes about an hour to get together (the other two are more like 20-30 minutes), but there are no real challenges along the way. There are no stickers, and the instructions and quite clear. The set is intended for the 8-12 age range, but a younger builder can certainly handle it if their attention span holds out! This is a nice one to work on together with someone else, actually, which helps the time pass quickly.
$39.99 is fair for this set, and if you happen to catch it on sale, it’s definitely a good pickup. You’ll probably be getting about 2 hours worth of build time, plenty more time doing fun stuff with the figures and van, and lots of pieces to spend yet more time free-building with. A good set for a vacation, trip, or just summer in general, and also a great choice if you like LEGO photography. "

Go diving for treasure!
" This is a nice, classic boat with a sleek design and ample room for the two minifigures both in the cabin and on deck. The underwater element is very small but adds a nice detail for the divers to interact with. Personally, I’d prefer if it were at least double the size, though, which would only take about ten extra pieces. If you have extra sand, rock, and seaweed pieces (or can get to a LEGO store brick wall to get them!), I’d definitely recommend expanding it.
Despite the low piece count, there is quite a lot going on with this set, which facilitates play both on the boat and underwater. It’s a great set to play with at the beach, too, although there are a few small pieces that could float away. Having the divers actually dive is obviously the best part of this set, though, and you’re certainly not limited to the underwater element provided. Even if you can’t get to the beach, use a table as the water level for the boat (optionally with the water-themed playmat from the LEGO store) and a chair or floor as the ocean floor for the divers to explore. Add shells, deep sea monsters, or plants for seaweed and have fun!
The bulk of the yacht is a single piece, and the rest of the build, including the underwater element, is very straightforward. There are some stickers to contend with, however, and the long ones which go on the side of the yacht will require some finesse.
A significant amount of your $25 is going into the single hull piece, so don’t expect to be building anything other than a boat with these pieces, but if you like boats, this is a solid choice. You’re also getting a couple of nice minifigs with hair pieces and helmets and several accessories, such as camera, video camera, water bottle, and watermelon slices! The amount marine life is a nice inclusion, which certainly adds to the play value. "

A gold standard in the City vehicles line!
" This tractor really looks great! I love the choice of colours, the smooth look of the final build, the huge tires, and the cab with all its lights. There is just the right amount of detail to everything, the build process is enjoyable, and you end up with a very solid feeling tractor. The extra accessories are perfect, and the single minifigure is fine because that’s all this set really needs. This is definitely a 5 out of 5 City model for me!
There’s a lot of play value included in this set! The tractor’s huge rubber wheels make it great to roll around on all kinds of terrain (note that they do really attract dust and dirt though!). The chains at the back for pulling/dragging/uprooting and the posable arm, which has lots of articulation, allow the tractor to interact with the other accessories, as well as other things you might want to pick up outside or around the house. The minifig worker can drive the tractor, cut logs with his chainsaw, plant a new tree, or even participate in the caber toss! A great indoor or outdoor set. (A young fellow of just two and a half who came along while I was shooting pictures of this set really enjoyed it and was completely fascinated by using the claw to pick up sticks.)
The build itself is fairly easy, though the large rubber tires may take some fiddling to get right, and younger builders are likely to need help with these. There are also six stickers to apply, but they are small and adhere well.
You're getting a very solid tractor for $25 here that’s fun to build and play with. With the amount of value dedicated to larger pieces such as the tires, the piece count may seem low, but overall the value is definitely there. Everything about it is very satisfying. "

Take a trip to the beach!
" This is probably the simplest starter set I’ve put together so far. The coast guard watch tower will go together in a minute or two, and you’ll be wondering, “Is that all?” Yes, yes it is. Now on to the beach! One tiny thing I have to nitpick is the lifejacket accessory, which leaves a gap between a minifig’s head and body and looks quite awkward.
This set works very well on its own, especially if you have access to some water (even a bathtub will do), and it’s an equally great fit with basically any city set involving water. Although the elements of the set are very simple, there’s a lot of interactivity here, and if you want to expand this set and make it a bit more exciting, I also like adding the water-themed Xtra accessory bag.
Three minifigures, plenty of accessories, a shark, a little vehicle, and a coast guard watch tower all for $12.99 seems quite reasonable! As usual, the starter sets are a solid value. If you happen to have a beach handy, you’ll need nothing else to be entertained (as long as you don't mind a little sand in your bricks)! "

Start your engines!
" Although I’m not a huge fan of race cars, I enjoyed this set a lot. All three builds can accommodate minifigures, and it's fun to subtly alter the builds to reflect their drivers. The choice of colours is very nice, too, and the main build looks quite sleek when complete, with very few studs left exposed. It's a nice display model, but all three builds can also fit in with your City sets or add some great options to your bucket of creator bricks.
The pieces in this set will also allow you to invent your own car, boat, and spaceship creations, but don't stop with vehicles! I've found that this set even allows you to build fish, insects, and mechanical beasts with a little imagination!
All three builds included are quite straightforward, and there are no stickers. This set should appeal to kids and adults alike, and at $12.99, this feels just right. "
