"Detectives Office being the 10th model in the modular range has to be one of my faves. Allot of detail doesn't disappoint. Assembling is pretty straight forward with some new advanced building techniques. My favourite would have to be the pool table, very clever. A great addition to any collection"

"I have the last few Lego Modular buildings released (the only Lego sets in our house actually), and I must say this set is my least favorite of the series.
What I do like about this set is the brick half of the building. The detail inside the pool hall and the detectives office are great and a lot of fun! For example, I love the pool table, the dart board, the removable ceiling fan, the clutter in the detectives office, the stray cat and the hidden safe. All these features do a great job of trying to capture the essence of this building (an old time detectives office on the seedy side of town).
The blue half of the building, however, is what drags this set down. While the barber shop is nice, the second and third floor are too small, particularly due to the recessed center brown part of the building. All there is on the 2nd floor is a bathroom and on the 3rd floor is a partially furnished kitchen. Ok, I can probably get past the 2nd floor just having a public bathroom, but the random kitchen on the 3rd floor that is fully open to the public is just a bit too much for me.
Perhaps having a secret cookie kitchen in the cellar or in a hidden attic would have worked OK - but in a public room just does not add to this set at all. Unfortunately, this 3rd floor room is also too small to really modify into something better...like a seedy accounting office for the mobsters that run the pool hall or something...
As far as the modulars go, I would recommend this set only if you already have all of the other modular buildings on your wish list."

It is great to see how many builders analyze each aspect of these Creator Expert modular buildings and how every detail is considered. This is exactly what our design teams does as well and the tight nature of this build is something that was actively discussed. While Jamie (the designer of this modular) did provide a great detailed back story along with this set it is important to see that just the small detail of having an open and unlocked kitchen was something that did not sit well with you.
I will share your concerns with the designers and stress the importance of realistic accuracies.

"I absolutely love this building. I like how it breaks up the building to create some different texture and color in the modular line. The signs are also great. I did wonder as I built, what's with all the hidden cookies? It was well worth watching the video with the designer to hear the story behind that. One of my new favorite pieces is the wanted poster in the detective's actual office."

"The amazing thing about Lego is that it can be adapted to your taste. You don't like something, you can simply change it. This is my 8th modular and (with the exception of adding an interior to Cafe Corner) all are in displayed as per the instructions. It's silly, but I'd feel like I'd be compromising the artists vision by altering their work. They're like little pieces of Lego art : ) And yet I look at Detective's Office and all I see is the flaws. It begs to be modified.
The two building are too small. The interiors too cramped to access - rendering the play features redundant. I'm guessing the (ugly) gaps between the ceiling and the roof on the ground floor are there to alleviate this; but it's a tacit admission of a design that's fundamentally flawed. The colours are poor. The Masonry blocks are a particularly unattractive shade, clashing badly with the garish barber shop. It feels value-engineered to me, compromised by budget.
There are positives. The toilet is brilliantly executed as are many of the small details.
Would I recommend this set to a friend? Absolutely... but only after they've bought every other Modular.
BTW. I gave this set three stars, which is not a true reflection of its quality. 3.5 stars is a more accurate score I feel."
I would recommend this to a friend!

Thank you for your review. While we are both aware of the reason for the gap in the ceiling I never thought of this small edit as an admission of flawed design until now. Our designers were attempting to increase the play functionality of the set to allow larger hands to access the interior details. It is important to understand how this effected the builder but also how it reflects upon our designers and The LEGO Group as a whole.
I will share this information with the designers and stress these points.
