"We picked this up on Black Friday and put it together later. The price is good considering there are three minifigures and some unique pieces as props. This might be the most inexpensive way to get a Jack Sparrow, which comes with a sword and a compass. A spare compass was provided. Also are two other pirate minifigures with swords and a revolver.
The other features include a globe, which has the continents on it. This is the only set I have seen that includes an Earth globe. Also included is a bone table with a map, a goblet, and a torch. There is also a shelf with two ships in bottles. The bottles are also of unique design. For many, the set might be worth the purchase due to the inclusion of hard to find pieces such as the globe or the bottles. Kids will enjoy the minifigures. It combines well with other sets of the theme. This one is easy to recommend."
"We bought this set to complete the Lord of the Rings Collection. This set is only sold in certain stores, so it may be a little harder to find. The price seemed a little bit off, but it is an interesting set.
Four minifigures are included. Lurtz is the Uruk Hai who is sent to try and retrieve the hobbits believed to be bearing the ring and bring them to Saruman. The creation of Lurtz and other Uruk Hai can be reenacted with a slot feature in the structure. There is armor available to use on him, but the hair and breastplate cannot be used at the same time. I do wish they had included a bow to use for the later encounter with Boromir. Another Uruk Hai is included, also with available armor. This set is the only one that has the white hand imprint on the helmets and shields. There are also two Mordor orcs included. A shovel and forging hammer are included as accessories for them to use.
The industrial setup is well designed with some moving parts and the light brick which gives life to the fiery furnace. The spiked wheel is featured, which allows a bucket to be attached to a winch to be pulled up to a platform. From there, the pieces representing metal ingots can be slid down a chute to a cauldron. This is in turn set on the furnace. There is also a feature which allows two swords to be attached to it so they can be "formed". Also, an anvil is made which can accommodate a breastplate, sword, or helmet.
Although this was the last set we chose to buy in this line, it is worthy of adding to a collection. The minifigures can be easily be used with other sets, especially the battle of Helm's Deep to enhance the Uruk Hai army. The Morder orcs can perhaps enhance the Mines of Moria set as well. It would have been nice to have Saruman included, but I suspect he may eventually be in another set that will complement this one. Overall, this is a good set with several unique pieces. It can also make an interesting display piece."
"I bought this set for my 4 year old. He really enjoys watching the Star Wars movies and always asks for the "X-Winger" at the store. Although it is a bit above his age range, I got it anyway, remembering growing up with the original trilogy and the figures and ships from the 1970s.
The build is fun and original. There are a lot of pieces used in the ship, some of which are custom made for this model. There are some stickers, but not too many. Most of the color and detail comes from various colored bricks as well as the variety of pieces. There is of course the option of using the wing function to expand the wings in the X formation. It involves turning a knob at the back of the ship to lock the wings in position. With my small kids, I will have to caution them on steering clear of the rubber bands as I believe this could be the Achilles heel of the set. Otherwise, the presentation and detail of the starfighter is excellent.
Four minifigures are included, including Luke with a lightsaber, Jek Porkins, R2D2, and another droid. One pilot and droid combination will fit in the ship at a given time.
Since this is such a classic model and is not terribly expensive, it is easy to recommend this. Even a casual fan of Star Wars would recognize this model, as it now appeals to more than one generation. I might actually consider getting another one. That way, the kids will have one to play with, ahd I could maybe display the other one somewhere."
"I can remember being a kid and getting the original LEGO yellow castle for a gift. It had lots of minifigs and was one of the most wanted sets in its time. I was also a Lord of the Rings and Hobbit fan, however there were no themed sets such as this.
My youngest kid watched as I built the fortress of Helms Deep. By far, this is the largest set so far I have built, and it is impressive in features and functions. The build is modular and sections of it can be partially disassembled for storage or even to rearrange the design of the fortress. Unlike the castle from long ago, this set has a variety of bricks and colors to give the fortress nice detail. There is lots of room for playing, as many figures can be arranged along the walls, in the keep, and on the entrance ramp. There are some nice functions kids will enjoy such as the catapult, the Gimli launcher, the openings above the main door, and the exploding wall. The Gimli launcher works best if you do place an Orc loosely across from it so you can complete the ambush. Other notable features include the keep with a throne room inside as well as a small table and chairs. I was a bit puzzled by the rat, but it is there nonetheless. The tall tower has a horn and a minifigure can be placed behind it. A loose ladder leads up to the top. The exploding wall seems to work well.
Eight minifigures are included, some of which are exclusive to the set. Theoden is designed really well with a detailed helmet and his armor. Gimli also has a really nice helmet. Haldir looks good with the cape. Aragorn is exactly the same as in the Weathertop set. There are three Uruk Hai soldiers and a beserker with the torch to activate the "bomb". All minifigures look good, and they easily fit the storyline in the movies.
I do recommend the Uruk Hai Army set to extend the wall a little bit as well as double the complement of enemy soldiers. If you bought the fortress, you might as well spend a little extra money and get the add on. While the set is costly, it does have a lot of bricks. Any Lord of the Rings fan would enjoy this in terms of build, displaying, and playability. The kids really enjoy playing with this, so it appeals to many ages. This is definitely a nice set."
"This set is certainly geared more for those who like the minifigures more than structures. Of course, this is not necessarily a bad thing. Six minifigures are included. Four are Uruk Hai orcs, and the other two are Rohan figures. The detail on the figures is really good and there is an interesting assortment of armor and weapons in the set. One could buy multiple sets if they are trying to collect an army. The 4-2 ratio of badguys to goodguys is good, because if you recreate the scene successfully,, you realize the orcs far outnumber the defenders.
A ballista is included. It does have a firing feature which shoots two hooks. They do not shoot far, although the design of the weapon is really good.
Also included is a section of Helm's Deep. It has some nice detail and includes a small catapult. The catapult shoots a piece that is capable of knocking a minifig down if shot right. The only strange thing about the fortress wall is that you cannot really pose a minifig on the stairway in the back. The stairs do not stick out far enough from the wall to enable a minifig to be placed except for maybe the first step. Otherwise, the roof is in the way.
Also included is a horse. The idea is to pose Eomer, one of the two Rohan minifigs, and have him attack the orcs head on.
If this set is bought before the Helm's Deep set, I would imagine someone would not be happy with just the smaller set. Likewise, if you buy the larger set first, you would not feel complete unless you had this. If you do not have enough for the larger set, go ahead and get this one and start saving.
Hopefully, a battle pack will be made in the feature that includes mounted Rohan soldiers to join Eomer and more orcs to maintain the badguy/goodguy ratio."
"This is the largest set we have purchased so far. The ship took a while to build, but it was fun to see the shape of it slowly take form. The complete set is nice enough to display in the house somewhere. Anyone who likes model ships might like to build something like the Black Pearl. There are some nice details such as the windows, cannon holes, anchor, and lanterns. Hopefully, Lego will make other sailing vessels in the future.
Six minifigures are included, and each one of them is unique. An array of swords, pistols, and other nautical objects are included. Playability is good, with two cannons included that can fire, Two cannons are sufficient since some deck space is needed for other characters and features. The cabin opens up to a table and chair. A treasure map is the centerpiece here. The only difficulty my kids have when playing with the ship is that they tend to break some pieces or accessories off and have to fish around for them. Space is limited on the main deck and in the cabin. It is also easy to knock the sails and masts around. Nevertheless, this is really a fun set visually, and the boys love it. The overall size is impressive for a Lego set."
"I ordered this set online because of a discounted price. Eventually I would have picked this up anyway, but the price made this a priority to add to the LOTR collection.
If you like lots of minifigures, this is your set. It has more members of the fellowship than any other set to date. Boromir, Legolas, and Pippin are exclusive. Gimli is also included, and this is the cheaper option for obtaining him. The cave troll and Moria orcs are also exclusive. The detail on them is great, especially Gimli. They also have a good variety of weapons. The orc sword is huge compared to the other swords. I would like to see a battle pack in the future for Moria orcs. Maybe include some orc archers since lots of arrows fly in Moria battles. Since the size of the badguy force is overwhelming, you definitely need more than two orcs to get the feel of the battle. The cave troll is well done, although there are some balance issues.
If you like lots of props, this is your set. There is an array of weapons, bones, jewels, and other items all throughout the build. This adds lots of playability. The set is not so much one structure, but a collection of key elements in the movie scene. It has the big doorway held shut by an axe, a large wall with collapsing columns and lots of props, the tomb of Balin, and the rigged well with skeleton.
If you like stickers, this is your set. One thing I might recommend is that you look ahead a few pages as you build. Sometimes, the sticker application instruction comes after the appointed brick is already attached to others. I personally find it easier to attach the sticker to a single brick, and then connect it to the other pieces. Applying stickers was the most time consuming part of the build, because I insist that they not be crooked.
This is a vital set for the Lord of the Rings fan. Kids will love it, because of the functionality and interesting characters. This is certainly well designed and a fun build."
"My son chose this set to get when given a choice of relatively inexpensive sets.
The main benefit seems to be that this is a good value for a fairly decent sized vehicle, four minifigures, and a creature build put together in one set. The iconic Luke Skywalker and Boba Fett are included. This is a good cheap way to get them compared to other sets. Also, there is the disguised Lando Calrissian and one of Jabba's minions. The figures are well detailed and include some interesting weapons.
The skiff itself was a fun build using some larger pieces. The kids like the play function of the plank to walk in addition to the secret weapons compartment. This vehicle has a lot of movable parts which can be fun. Clear pieces on the bottom give the skiff the appearance of hovering above the surface as it does in the movie.
The creature is large enough to fit a minifigure inside. It kind of reminds me of the plant from "Little Shop of Horrors"
I highly recommend this one for the nice design, the value, and the minifigures included. Would have been nice to have Han and Chewie, but perhaps this is better to keep the price down."
"I bought this for my youngest son, because he felt like getting a helicopter. The build was easy, and my son enjoys the play value. The price was decent as most people could probably afford this. There is one minifigure, the policeman/pilot. A couple of props such as handcuffs and binoculars are provided which can fit into small compartments. If your kid is really young, you may want to hide those until they are old enough not to lose them. There are some stickers which require a careful effort to get them centered on the respective blocks.
We are thinking of getting him the police station for Christmas, because it has the helicopter pad.
"I purchased this for my soon to be four year old, because this is what he picked out at the store. He really enjoys the police sets. The build was fun and easy. Quickly, the main vehicle was put together, and he was ready to play with it.
Lots of pros to this. It is not too expensive, and it has a lot of little props. There is a flishlight, walkie talkie, handcuffs, a megaphone, and something else I cannot identify. A tool box is available to store these in the vehicle. There is even a little cup for the police driver. The set comes with one police officer and a criminal. The criminal comes with a small motorcycle and a backpack with money in it. A police barricade is also provided.
A main benefit of this is the number of moving parts besides the wheels. There are plenty of doors on the vehicle. The only improvement I would have made would be to make the driver compartment have a hinged roof instead of having to take the two large pieces off in order to take the driver in and out of the vehicle.
Overall, this is an excellent choice for a large age range."
