"Weathertop was a fun set to build. My boys enjoyed playing with it. Even though they do not understand the story of the Lord of the Rings, they think the set is interesting.
Legos sure have changed since I had the first castle set when I was a kid. Now, there is a great variety of bricks and props. This set used some interesting techniques in order to get the rounded effect. The set seemed to reflect the air of mystery that Weathertop must have had. There is a trap door and a couple of flick fire missiles that kids will like. Inside the tower is also a weapon rack, a mouse, and what I assume is a palantir stand. Hopefully Lego will eventually develop the palantir itself in a future design. Props also include torches, food items, a "campfire", and a backpack.
Two ringwraiths with black horses are in the set. The appearance is excellent. The only problem I have is that the hood does not stay on well. I am going to use some school glue and see if that helps. Aragorn is in the set as well as Frodo and Merry. This is the only set that contains Merry.
Although the design is good, and the minifigures are a plus, I must concur with many reviews that the set is significantly overpriced, even for a licensed set. Weathertop's reputation for being expensive is well deserved.
Beside the tower and figures, there is one other portion that includes a little bit of a ruin, a bush, and some grass. I would have preferred that this be left out, and instead either another minifigure or more detail to the main tower be added.
Overall, this is a good set, and vital to a collector due to ringwraiths and Merry."
"I would imagine the primary reason for purchasing this set is to acquire the Gandalf minifigure. Being the least expensive of this line of sets, I recommend this as a good one to start with. It is the only set so far with Gandalf. A Shire version of Frodo also comes with the set. Another popular piece is likely to be the horse. It can be set up to pull the cart. There is also a slot on the horse that can allow it to be mounted with a minifigure.
The cart itself is easy to build, and comes with several props. Fireworks, a barrel, a backpack, an envelope, a book , and a carrot are included. It makes a nice desktop or presentation set.
Overall, a good set which I can recommend. The only things I would improve on are fairly minor. I would have preferred that Gandalf's staff would resemble the one in the movie. Also, the carrot top comes off very easily from the bottom. Gandalf does not sit exactly centered on the cart--again this is minor. If one rearranges the items in the cart, it is possible to carry Frodo in it as well."
"I bought this due to being a fan of the trilogy. Also, my 4 and 5 year olds are fascinated by the giant spider.
Shelob is well designed. More the most part, it has held together very well. The details are good, and the moving parts imitate a spider's poses and movements really well. There are no stickers, which is nice. A hook is used as the stinger, and some string can serve its purpose of either wrapping up minifigures or possibly to hang the spider from something. For Halloween, we will probably hang Shelob from a front window.
The minifigures are nicely detailed. Sam and Frodo have two facial expressions to choose from. There are three rings, three swords, a star glass, and a fish as props. Gollum is interesting, although only the arms move. One of the swords is Sting. I agree with some others that Lego should have made a blue version of this. Playability is good, although I suspect with my kids the capes could be a weakness. They look like they would tear easily with small children.
Overall, this is a fun set, and I look forward to trying new LOTR sets."
