"As a stand alone set, lot of play features, good crane, cow is fun....really nice set. Glad we added to our collection
The only issue is the pallets are not compatible with the older cargo trucks. The pallets won't fit in our cargo truck 60020. Truck can only hold 6 stud long pallets, the train uses 8. My kids were very disappointed when they couldn't put the pallets of the train into the cargo truck. The truck that comes with the set is open so not an issue, the 60020 is enclosed and per my kids much cooler. We have modified our old truck, but disappointing pallets were not consistent along the cargo city line. After all, isn't the whole point of staying within a certain theme is so all the sets will work together? Hoping the Lego Designers in the future will stick to a common pallet length standard to avoid this issue in the future."
"Have had this set for a few months. Here are my thoughts. In short, this is not one of my favorite modular sets. While I am glad TLG keeps moving to make the buildings unique, IMO this one does not fit in with the others. Also IMO I really just don't care for the colors or the overall look. That said, it was a fun build and glad the series is continuing. Was not very excited to see it was a Diner, already have a cafe in Assembly Square and a full restaurant in Parisian restaurant. Wish they would have kept with the original car dealership theme or something unique. So here's the skinny Pros Very detailed interior Nice boxing ring Building displayable from three sides Real faces on the mini figs
Cons Only one boxer for the boxing ring (need a least two) Really does not fit in with the other buildings of the series
Not sure the whole theme of a diner, gym and radio studio all in the same building works. Would like to see a future set that is more focused on one theme, like a Hospital, Car Dealership, Hotel, etc. Nice if the whole building had a common theme.
While I would recommend this set, if you are not going to collect the whole series their are better sets still available. I would rate this set right in the middle compared to the previous releases. Not great, not horrible, just average for the theme.
Additional: Here are a few thoughts I would like to see on a possible future modular release. Would be good additions to the series. Both would offer good play/display value.
Hotel Floor 1, Check in Desk/ Lobby Floor 2, Few suites Floor 3, Swimming pool Needs an elevator
"Picked up this set before Christmas on sale, really solid build. Like it so much picked up a second one. Was able to change out a few pieces and able to make a nice competitor build (color scheme based off the Champion series Mercedes F1 team). Kids have dropped off the table a few time, sets hold up well. Great set if you are still able to find."
"Another great set from Lego. Camper is awesome. A lot of play value. Easy build. My kids love this set. The truck is the only weak link. Its ok, no moving doors or front bumper. Kids have substituted the truck with the one from the ATV set. Can see from the pictures you get a whole lot more than the last camper set. Personally I like the older green color, but ok with the the change to blue.
Buy this set, you won't be sorry. Great value, only $10 more than last years set!!!"
"Kids and I love putting these winter village sets together. Has become a very fun Holiday tradition. If you have not started getting these sets......you need to start now. Seriously go to your local Lego store and pick them up today. You won't be sorry.
As for this set specifically, good addition to our village. Have seen a few negative reviews. While not our favorite set of the winter village series, still a lot of fun here. Is it worth the price, to us yes. Are we glad we got it, yes. Would we have been happy if Lego had made something else instead, probably. Hard to put a price on the family memories around this series.
Pros Fits our village theme Kids like the van More presents Only had one mini fig casualty so far on the road crossing
Cons Coffee shop a bit small Could use a few more mini figs with set"
"Just got this set for the kids (on sale). Been out for awhile. Mixed reviews on internet. Here are my thoughts.
Pros Nice sized boat, police boat What pieces came with the main boat were good Nice to get 4 mini figs. Kids like the pudgy prisoner
Cons Red crooks boat really simple build, limited parts. Prisoner does not really fit in his cell Cell door is just sitting in a hole, its not connected to anything Large percentage of police boat main deck empty
Basically the boat has some play value but is a bit pricey for what you get. Think you could get more bang for your buck with a different set. Kids are planning on redesigning boat
Note to Lego. Like the idea of the set. I will buy more boat sets. Realize piece count to price/profit dictates what you can or cannot do. Ok at $50 price point. Feel play value would increase if less was spent on the crooks boat (really not a good design and too few parts) and more detail put into the police boat. Large area of main deck not used at all. Like 4 mini figs in the set. Feel most kids with Lego already have a small boat they could use as the bad guy boat, not needed in the set."
"My kids really like this set. Lots to do, prisoners escaping like crazy....probable one of the least secure prisons ever made. Large workout yard for inmates, secret escape tunnel, bunk beds, watch tower, balloon, police boat and helicopter. Even has a small dock. Recommend you combine with a police station. Kids are always transporting prisoners back and forth. Hours of fun.
Really couldn't ask Lego to do much more here.
Modification: We took the watch tower section (just the top) and made it into a control tower for our airport (we don't have any of the Lego airport sets). Base of control tower is just a bunch of 1 by 4 bricks made into a "u" shape. Looks good, solid and cost effective."
