Main Boss
" This is the biggest set in the first cycle of the Super Mario Kits and is much more a traditional Lego build. It also looks great as a centre piece on your display unit. Probably my second favourite of the Lego kits in this theme.
Bowser actually jumps up and down because of the construction of the drawbridge. Really fun to do and doesn't need the Starter Course to have fun with this set - of course you don't have Mario to defeat the boss if you do that.
Merges in really well with the rest of the Lava themed sets that are released up to now and you can easily separate the pieces out to build your course. There's only really the main castle that needs to be kept as one piece.
The big downside for me was that you have no build instructions in the kit it all has to be downloaded through the app. Make sure your device has full battery before you start, especially if you are building multiple sets in the series at the same time or else you can get in the situation I was in where 2 bags from the end my battery died. This is the set where this happened to me and fortunately we had a backup of the app already downloaded to my sons phone so I pinched that in order to complete this BIG build.
The 1 minute timer does mean you have no hope of completing a large course. I thought it would be nice if when you click Start on the app it asks you which kits you have your course built from and it adjusts the timer to suit.

Toadette
" I was attracted to this set by the colours of the toadstool houses, yes I'm that easily led. It also helps that one of the many nicknames the boy has is Toad which is based on the Mario games.
I was adamant I was building this kit because it just looked really fun and it was great to build. I was worried that the sheer size of it would mean it wouldn't fit on the table we had allocated for building the course. I am a complete and utter idiot, this set really does break down in to so many pieces so you can slot the houses absolutely anywhere on your course and it doesn't have to be in one big square. Does look great built in one square though.
The inclusion of the Toad and Toadette characters is a nice bonus and I grabbed this one so quick I hadn't seen Toadette on the box so it was a nice bonus for this builder.
The big downside for me was that you have no build instructions in the kit it all has to be downloaded through the app. Make sure your device has full battery before you start, especially if you are building multiple sets in the series at the same time or else you can get in the situation I was in where 2 bags from the end my battery died.

"Kids choose their own route for LEGO® Mario™ to reach the Guarded Fortress with this fun-packed Expansion Set (71362). A fantastic gift for kids who own the LEGO® Super Mario™ Starter Course (71360), it features a buildable fortress, catapult, brick-built water and lava routes and POW Block, plus Bob-omb, Koopa Troopa and Piranha Plant toy figures for LEGO Mario to defeat. (Note: LEGO Mario figure is not included; find it in the Starter Course set.) Awesome app A free LEGO Super Mario app is available for this set. It has cool, intuitive viewing tools to aid construction, offers a safe platform for kids to share ideas and has lots of inspiration for other creative ways to build and play. Competitive action Collectible LEGO Super Mario toy playsets bring an iconic character into the real world and are great for competitions with friends or solo gameplay. Koopa On Guard
" Makes a great first level boss arrangement, the Baby Bowser figure from the Starter Course works really well on here, especially after you've defeated the Koopa. The castle itself looks great built and there are a lot of elements that you can separate out and use to build your own design course.
I wasn't particularly keen on the layout of this kit as is, the hinged plates just look ugly and it felt like a way to keep the piece count and therefore the price down. I would have rather paid a little bit more and had clean, straight lines. The Piranha Plant looks great but it doesn't pull back as well as the in app video shows, not a big issue if there are two of you playing as one can move him after the other hits the trigger point.
The big downside for me was that you have no build instructions in the kit it all has to be downloaded through the app. Make sure your device has full battery before you start, especially if you are building multiple sets in the series at the same time or else you can get in the situation I was in where 2 bags from the end my battery died.
The 1 minute timer does mean you have no hope of completing a large course. I thought it would be nice if when you click Start on the app it asks you which kits you have your course built from and it adjusts the timer to suit.

Spooky
" This is one of my favourite pieces out of the whole of Super Mario Cycle One. I have been eyeing it up on the Lego Website for a couple of weeks and decided that I was not getting the rest of the collection until I got this one. Then I stumbled across it in a local store and it really made my Saturday.
We had a bit of a "discussion" about who was building it but unfortunately my 28 year old son won that one so I didn't get to build this set. It looks absolutely wonderful built and is definitely a great display item as well as having play value. This is the only kit with brown base plates but seeing as King Boo is a game boss you can put this anywhere on a course - we've decided that you should battle through the desert and then end up here.

Watchtower
" This is one of the most prevalent themes in Cycle One - the fire theme. You can tell which theme a set belongs to from the colour of the base plates.
The boy built this particular kit as we were doing a joint build to get all the packs we'd purchased completed and then we could start mixing and matching to play. He had a few issues with the tower construction and the Thwomp dropping after two swipes but the video on the app showed three swipes. Figured out he just wasn't setting the Thwomp high enough on the tower.
No stickers in this kit, which is a welcome break from Lego tradition. It means the faces look great on the characters and the other elements.

"Fans can enhance their LEGO® Super Mario™ gameplay and enjoy lots of creative role-play fun with this Mario’s House & Yoshi Expansion Set (71367). This collectible toy playset features a buildable house with an opening door and roof with a Super Star Block underneath. Awesome app The free LEGO Super Mario app has cool viewing tools to help build this module, plus suggestions for creative ways to build and play, and it offers a safe platform for kids to share their creations. Sleepy Time
" At first I wondered why Mario had a hammock but we discovered by accident that if you leave him switched on he starts to complain he's sleepy because he's not doing anything and if you lie him down he snores. Now the hammock makes sense.
To be honest the big selling point for this kit was the Yoshi figure as this is the only kit that has one. He looks really good, just a shame there are no apples on the tree for him to eat. He also isn't ridable which the boy and I agreed we would have loved.
Not a massive amount of flexibility with this one as you can't really separate the house and tree but it does have some "extra" baseplates and connector plates so you can easily merge it with other courses.
The big downside for me was that you have no build instructions in the kit it all has to be downloaded through the app. Make sure your device has full battery before you start, especially if you are building multiple sets in the series at the same time or else you can get in the situation I was in where 2 bags from the end my battery died.

"Fans can add a Piranha Plant Power Slide challenge to their LEGO® Super Mario™ universe and train to be better at collecting coins with this fun Expansion Set (71365). This collectible toy playset features a platform on rails on a seesaw with Piranha Plants at either end, a Time Block to earn extra time on the course for LEGO® Mario™ (figure not included), plus Goomba and Koopa Troopa figures to defeat. A great gift for kids, this building toy combines with the Adventures with Mario Starter Course (71360), which has the LEGO Mario figure and can be rearranged for fresh gameplay options. Slippin and Slidin
" One of only two desert themed sets in the first cycle of the Super Mario sets. It is not that versatile in terms of building courses though as it is pretty much just the slide. Also, the slide itself takes a bit of time for you to get all the Mario coins so it makes that 1 minute timer run down really rapidly.
The look of it is great though and the piranha plants look really good and very reminiscent of the ones in the early Mario games. 8 Bit definitely lends itself well to being recreated in bricks.
Building was straight forward and the boy reported it was really fun and satisfying watching one of the first games he played as a toddler coming to life. The big downside for me was that you have no build instructions in the kit it all has to be downloaded through the app. Make sure your device has full battery before you start, especially if you are building multiple sets in the series at the same time or else you can get in the situation I was in where 2 bags from the end my battery died.

Bullet Dodge
" One of the iconic characters from the Mario Games have to be the Bullet Bills and this kit features the large versions which are apparently are called Boomer Bills. Every day is a school day it seems.
This is a more flexible kit as there are more sections included that mean you can genuinely mess about with how it looks and how it fits with your other kits. The main feature is the Boomer Bills that circle round for you to defeat and then you have the little guy to defeat as well.
The build itself was fairly standard for Lego builds but I still enjoyed it despite not really liking the small kits. The big downside for me was that you have no build instructions in the kit it all has to be downloaded through the app. Make sure your device has full battery before you start, especially if you are building multiple sets in the series at the same time or else you can get in the situation I was in where 2 bags from the end my battery died.

Fire Dodging
" Nice addition to the course with a slide element and a large Whomp character. Even better, no stickers all the details are pre-printed on to the blocks so it makes building much more fun (have I mentioned I hate putting stickers on?)
The build was fun and relatively straightforward to put together. The big downside for me was that you have no build instructions in the kit it all has to be downloaded through the app. Make sure your device has full battery before you start, especially if you are building multiple sets in the series at the same time or else you can get in the situation I was in where 2 bags from the end my battery died.
You don't have to incorporate the set as is in to your course, you can easily take sections and pop them in different locations. Definitely good for creativity.

" The power up pack doesn't have the ID tag brick so I wasn't sure how Mario himself was going to register he had a special suit on. Turns out it is through the pins on the Mario figure and where they slot in to the suit tells the figure which suit he has on.
Nice addition to a course but mean you will run out of time as you can't get Mario out of his standard suit in to the special suit and complete even the shortest course in 1 minute.
Build instructions are on the app rather than in the box.
