Going To War
" Want to defeat Gleck? Then you definitely need Hero Wu and his handy dandy Battle Dragon.
This is a fun little build but the absence of the moulded dragon head and making it brick built is a bit of a disappointment. He just feels slightly unfinsihed and odd looking. The body and thick wings are great so mitigated some of the disappointment but the lack of features on the head and the fact he doesn't have a moving mouth do spoil it somewhat. How am I supposed to get him to breathe fire at Gleck?
Fun little sword minibuild on the orange base that is used for the Skull Sorcerer series so blends in well with that and allows a little expansion if you have some other sets. Overall, for the price he is good value but I think I would have rather paid a couple of pounds more and had a proper head on the dragon.
Please Note: The grey baseplate under the minifigures is from my stash and not part of the build.

Hogwarts
" I avoided purchasing these for several months as the individual House Crests just didn't appeal to me. However, the more I looked at the big Hogwarts Crest comprising 4 of these kits the more I wanted it. Lets be honest this is a big investment but as each crest is 16" x 16" they are not insubstantial and do make a statement when on display. Admittedly, I have yet to find somewhere to hang the 32" x 32" full crest so it is currently on floor level display.
Each crest is made up of 9 16stud x 16stud plates that are then connected at the sides and rear and they are surprisingly sturdy when linked together with technic pins and system plates. The included booklet takes you through making Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw house crests and there are enough 1x1 roundels in each kit to make one of the four. This does mean that you get a LOT of leftover dots depending on which option you go for but it does mean you can use one set to customise your own design if you so wish. Construction is strangely similar to cross stitch. Coloured grid that indicates where to put each colour on the base plate - I would have said diamond painting but that is printed on the canvas. Lot of fun to do and I will likely use the instructions to make a custom cross stitch piece if I ever manage to stop my fingers itching to click bricks and pick up a needle and thread.
The individual crests actually look better in person than on photographs but I did make the decision to break them down as I desperately wanted to make the full school crest. One thing that does bother me is the House Symbol for Ravenclaw is supposed to be an eagle but the designers went with a Raven - yes, yes, I get it but honestly NO!
The full school crest is SPECTACULAR. Honestly, if you can get 4 of these kits and make the full crest it is well worth every single penny. You have to download the instructions from Lego direct but they are free and in .pdf format so you can load them on any electronic device or even print them out if you need to. I used my Fire 10 tablet to download the instructions on to and it was a breeze. Even better you can zoom in on the diagram for roundel placement so makes it nice and easy.
As you have so many pieces left over after making the school crest I did add extra plates to the back to reinforce it and it is solid. You do only put 2 wall attachments in place at the back and when/if I get around to wall mounting I will put at the very least another two on there just to spread the load a little bit more and make me feel less anxious.
Overall my rating for the individual crests would have been a 3.5/4 out of 5 Stars. However, the School Crest is so incredible this has boosted the overall rating to a maximum 5 out of 5 Stars.

Headquarters
" I have been enjoying the Modular range of buildings but I wasn't too sure about this one, particularly with the very small buildings either side of the main structure. I did love the effect of ivy trailing up the side of the building and the way the arcitecture of the Police Station matches well with the existing line so I decided that I would take the plunge and get it. I am SO glad that I did.
Yes, the donut shop and the newspaper stand are small. However, proportionally they work really well with the main building. The colour contrasts work to their advantage and the donut shop feels much more spacious than it really is.
It is the little details that make this one for me. However, talking of details what is the Lego obsession with toilets? It is genuinely amazing to me how many sets have a toilet build crammed in there; even better most of them are built in different ways so you do get to try a range of techniques for such a standard piece of equipment. Now I've got past that can we talk about the crime board in the office - you can't see it when it's on display as a full building but it made my dried up little heart sing with joy.
Wonderful mixture of building techniques and some new SNOT uses that I hadn't used previously (or if I have then I have forgotten them). The use of the gear wheels for trees is absolute genius.
Fabulous set with impressive detailing and is a great deal of fun to build.

Green For Go
" I am a massive fan of the technic line and although I always put off the smaller sets as I love a big build I was actually quite excited to start this kit. The pull back mechanism is an awesome inclusion and gives a lot of fun playability to the set - but, be careful they do have a tendency to run the full length of my table and need catching before they hit the floor.
The main build here is the Dragster and it even comes with the ability to run it with the front wheels lifted off the ground. I didn't find this as smooth to operate as all 4 wheels on the ground when playing but your mileage may vary (pun not intended but I'll go with it). Looks really cool when built, I was surprised how nice the end vehicle was at it did look a little basic on the box art. This is one case where the stickers really do elevate the finished product and give it a nice dimensionality if you are adding it to your display.
The second build is the Hot Rod which is probably my favourite version of the build. Instructions for this build need to be downloaded from Lego but come in .pdf format so you can access them from more or less any electronic device. I use my tablet as it is a 10" screen so makes them easy to read.
Fun to build with a lot of familiar Technic techniques. This would definitely be a great introduction set to the range but be warned, they are addicting!

Wingardium Leviosa
" As a big Harry Potter fan i was on the fence initially about these books. I knew I would get them but I wasn't sure if I was really in love with them. One plus point for me is that each Moment is based around a class that is related to one of the houses and this reflected in the minifigures included and the overall colour choices for the book.
Charms - Ravenclaw
The book itself is quite small and falls somewhere between A6 and A5 when compared to actual paper sizes. I did think they would be slightly larger based on the box size. However, there is so much detail included in each classroom that I found I soon overcame the slight disappointment I felt on their size.
The Transfiguration Class opens up to a full classroom scene that relies on it being laid out on a play surface. Incorporating a blackboard explaing the Wingardium Leviosa spell, shelving with a range of supplies and a host of little bits and pieces. Of course it has some classroom furniture so Professor Flitwick can teach Cho and Harry.
I was surprised at how snuggly everything fits back in to the book so that you can fold everything away in true playset fashion. Unfortunately, the minifigures do not fit in to the closed book so they do stand a high chance of being separated from the set.
My favourite display option is to have it open as the full book. If you have all 4 of the series they do link together in to a circle which makes for a fun look. It does take up a surprising amount of space though.
Overall an entertaining take on the Harry Potter franchise that was fun to build and offers a good balance between playability and display.

However, there is so much detail included in each classroom that I found I soon overcame the slight disappointment I felt on their size.
The Potions Class opens up to a full classroom scene that relies on it being laid out on a play surface. Incorporating a blackboard with potion ingredients, shelving with a range of supplies and a host of little bits and pieces. Of course it has some classroom furniture so Professor Snape can teach Seamus and Draco. The way this particular Classroom is constructed means it splits in to 2 separate areas and this is really effective. The detailing on the "spine" wall is exceptional and even incorporates a nice stylised snake.
I was surprised at how snuggly everything fits back in to the book so that you can fold everything away in true playset fashion. Unfortunately, the minifigures do not fit in to the closed book so they do stand a high chance of being separated from the set.

Race The Cat
" These are a pair of very sturdy race cars that look just as good on display as they do being played with. Good rolling action on the tyres and they really do look great on my shelf with other Speed Champion series vehicles.
There are some stickers to apply and a couple of them did test me but I got ther ein the end - well, good enough that I can live with them at least.
I liked that you have a male and a female minifigure driver in the set and that both have hair and helmet options. Just adds nicely to creating a story around the vehicles. I did go with the helmeted in vehicle version as it reduces the need for shelf space otherwise they would have been displayed next to the cars.
Nice addition of the starting gate which was a satsifying build despite being so simple.
Overall a good variety of building techniques are demonstrated over both vehicles and it really shows what you can achieve with only a few pieces.

Small and Perfectly Formed
" First off, I am so disappointed that Lego didn't go with this model for the 1:8 Scale Technic release. When I first saw the teaser images from Lego I was absolutely in love with this model and then when I found out it was roughly 1:16 I was disappointed. It is so beautiful that it would make a fabulous addition to the larger builds.
There are a few pre-printed pieces in the set but a large portion of the decoration is by stickers. Yep, sticker heavy but well worth persevering with as they elevate the look immeasurably.
The problem with the smaller Technic builds, for me, is that the engine block is simplified right down and that is my favourite bit of any Technic build. Have to say I had a complete blast building this car and enjoyed every single second of it (you couldn't wipe the grin off my face as it grew into a beautiful vehicle from chunks of plastic).
