" Looking back on the history of the modular series, the intent was to offer a series to AFOLs and TFOLs with a more mature subject matter. Never forgetting that Lego is a toy, the folks at Lego seem to be steering the modular line more towards children and away from adults. The Detective's Office (DO) spends far too much effort on a needless storyline and playability features. This should be an AFOL product, but it's more like a City product.
The colors don't work. The blue on the right side of the building is garish and the color of bricks on the pool hall side is a unpleasant beige tone. The colors in the building not only are bad, but they fight with each other.
The designer appears to have designed an elaborate interior. When finished with the interior, he was surprised to find that he didn't have enough left in his budget to build an exterior building that would house his over the top interior. The interior winds up being cramped and the actual building ends up being small and looking out of place next to the other modulars.
Please put the modular series back on an AFOL level. No gratuitous story lines, no interiors that waste parts that would better be spent on the actual building. If your intention is to continue to move the modular series towards a children's market, then please expand the architecture series to include larger and more complex sets. "

I am sorry the Detective's Office did not meet the expectations that the modular series has set for you. I am glad to hear that the interior detail was exceptional but that the color scheme did not appeal.

While the storyline might not necessarily appeal to every builder a story has existed with every set as it is these stories that drive the designers to create them. Like the designers, builders can create their own stories to complement each of their sets.

" An incredible amount of detail in this set. Ignoring the weird bootlegging-cookies theme, there’s a lot of really nice design elements here. Pool hall with table, darts board and sturdy overhead fan (much more sturdy than the chandelier in the shop modular). Nice rounded facade. Lots of hidden passages.
Nary a sticker in the set (since that’s something people care about I guess?) — a *lot* of nice printed tiles for wanted posters, newspapers, maps, letters, dartboard, paintings, cookies, window signs, etc.
New pieces (or at least pieces I haven’t seen before) — an L-shaped 2x2 but flat, an odd 4x4 L-shape piece, 1x1 round bits with a hole through the center. They finally made a 1x4x2 fence with all 4 studs on top, which I have always wanted.
Set is pre-sorted into 4 sections. (Searching for the right piece is half the fun for me so I mixed them all from the start, but the option is there.)
Minor gripes: When I first saw this set, I was hoping for two split buildings like the modular pet store for more flexibility in arranging my modular town, but after building it I realize the why it’s all one piece. The two different shades of blue are hard to tell apart from the instructions but have a nice effect over all. Light and dark grey are also confusing (as they have been for years).
Overall, the town modular theme continues to impress. "

" I, like, many other Lego fans, built and own previous modular sets. Knowing another new modular set coming always excites me because building them gives me a great sense of accomplishment, mainly due to great level of complexity.
I also had the "privilege" to build this one with my almost 80 year-old father. It was hard for him because he never built anything like this before and hard for him to follow the instruction. We spent four nights building this set with my mother helping sorting the pieces though majority was actually built by me. It was fun family time.
After finishing building it, I felt a sense of disappointment. I don't feel the same level of accomplishment. With my parents checking back and forth of the final work and amazed, I, on the other hand, understood why some of the reviews saying this set is a disappointing one. The level of complexity in this set is not up to par with very limited "wow" factor. This is the tenth set in this line but it shows some sign of "exhaustion" in design idea from the team. There is also a sense of "hike" in price (if that is the reflection of inflation or increase in material cost) which makes me feel this set is bit "overpriced". Finally, I would like to say, "Go, go, go, design team, please continue surprising us with your ideas!" Thanks. "

It is great to see that the whole family came together for this set and as you have shown with your father, you are never too old to start building.

While I am thrilled with the group building experience, I am also sad to see that this set was not your favorite. I am not certain what was lacking to create the "wow factor" for you but I will definitely let the designers know.

Hopefully the next modular will provide your family with hours of building and bonding time!

" I had anticipated this set from when it was first debuted, and wanted one to add to my collection of official sets and my own modular creations.
It has a lot of nice techniques in its design, using a lot of parts I haven't seen or used before. Mostly from other lines of sets that I wouldn't normally want to have. I appreciate that, it adds to my ideas for my own designs.
I have all the modulars from the Fire Brigade to this one. I have to say though, this is the first modular set that I wanted to modify right from the start. I think it could of been quite a bit larger, balancing interior parts with exterior more evenly. There is a lot of empty space in the back to me.
I like my modulars to make real design sense, and this one has a lot of strange choices. One example, the center part, behind the fire escape detail is a different color from the buildings on either side, for no logical reason other than to add more colors. Another is the stairs up take up a lot of space and are open to the interior of the barbershop...hard to get in there, even though they can be folded out of the way.
Nice with no stickers, all printed parts and quite a few nice ones, even a mirror piece. Colors can hit or miss, and the blues miss with me, the other colors used are OK.
I can recommend this set to anyone wanting all the modulars in their own collection. "
