An all-in set with some really fun ideas
" This set is an all-in. Less than a week after opening the starter course, I was looking for additional roads (2X8 a bit more or la bit less), I soon found out that I didn't have much as expected from all the LEGO Classic I bought through the years : they had to be the right color (blue, red, green, yellow).
I was so happy to see Larry Koopa, far more than my 3 years old son. You have to have played the video game to fully understand how big he his!
The Customization Machine is like a magic trick performed by a magician. Mario can't read the bar code unless you push the red button. Not only this, but from every model we built until now, we have always pressed a brick on top of another with studs (ok, I will admit that they are a few exceptions with Technic and others), but never did I lay a brick on a flat surface brick like that! I really was sceptic when looking at the online manual; how can it possibly work?!
Tips for the builders: I did build it with my son and I inverted the side where the red button should push and it didn't work, so it may be a common mistake that many did too. After making the modification it worked!
Another ingenious build is the sliding platform. That one was really entertaining for my son. I should try to make a really long one one day! "

Our favorite Super Mario set!
" My son was really looking forward to opening it after seeing the video in the application. We have almost every Super Mario set and according to my son (3 years old) and me, we think it is the best set in the collection. It's a well deserved 5 star!
As soon as we get on the platform (it has a barcode), the music starts. We move it from left to right and then backwards, allowing the hammer to hit a block of the Pokey each time.
In terms of building the set, I had a little help to make the Pokey and the hammer because, in my opinion, they were the two most interesting elements for my son. The smooth vertical corridor is what allows the Pokey to stay in place and go down with every blow it receives. This is a great idea! I know that designers use different techniques for each set, but I'd like them to redo it!
The build time was 45 minutes. "

A quiet place
" My son couldn't wait for us to do the set, he wanted to set up the hammock and put Mario to sleep in it.
For my part, I was impressed by the technique used to make a sloped roof.
On the playability side, here's what I noticed:
I don't think Mario can fall asleep as soon as you start a 60 seconds course. We tested him, but he wouldn't close his eyes! For that reason, I don't think it's the most important set to own, but aesthetically it has its place though. It's a bit like a place where Mario goes to rest and the equivalent of a place where he could talk with characters to find out what's going on. A perfect place to become aware of his mission.
Mario's house also hides an invincible star, which is always appreciated in a level. We can take the block and place it somewhere else, right in front of one of Bowser's children, let's suppose. :)
Having seen my son play, I understand why LEGO chose to make a half house and half tree: we always stay on the same side to play, we never go behind, we move from left to right to make our course.
If I had an idea to improve the set :
Yoshi doesn't have electronic capability and he can't replace Mario, but I think we could make him even more useful by changing what the barcode does in front of him! He's currently giving away 5 gold coins, but he could give away a Yoshi egg or something else! :)
As others have also mentioned, I may take some of my blocks to allow the hammock to swing more.

If only Mario could bend his knees! He'd dodge!
" The building took us about 30 minutes.
Sometimes you can hear a Boomer Bill/Bullet Bill sound, it is like when either when Mario jumps on it or when it hits a wall. The sound is just as I remember it!
It's very interesting that the set contains two levels of difficulty: you can put Mario on the smooth brick or press it on the studs. The wheel mechanism that makes the Boomer Bills spin works very well and if one hits Mario, he gets dizzy after falling. It is always fun when it happens! Good thinking!
If the product could be different, would I have changed anything?
Intuitively, while playing, my son tried to crush the Boomer Bill with Mario, but I told him that there was no barcode like on the Bullet Bill. I can't remember if there is a reason based on the video game, it could be for stability as well because the structure is not made to take hits.
Did you know that the Shy Guy from the set #71366 is different from the look alike Shy Guy in Series 2 (#71386)? My 3 year old son taught me that! He asked me where the propeller is, there should be one on the top of its head!? Whitout him, I wouldn't have noticed the difference in between Shy Guy and Fly Guy! "

Mario won't have it easy
" Building each character takes 3 to 5 minutes. They are designed to be quickly assembled to play with as soon as possible. In addition to the fact that the characters are different from those of series 1, we notice the presence of a new base color that came out with the 2nd wave: swamp. Mario reacts every time he sets foot in it, it's very funny.
My son (3 years old) says he loves them all equally, not one of them a little less.
Poisonous Mushroom: it's the funniest thing when playing with Mario, it makes him dizzy. My son laughs every time. It's my favorite because it is not about gold coin. It has a negative effect that slows down our progress on the course and is funny at the same time.
Bone Goomba: it's our first one, it has nothing special in itself, but like all characters it's well done.
Ninji: Ours had a small defect in the impression of the face, it's hardly noticeable though. Since he's a ninja, we'll use his abilities to hide and jump to surprise Mario.
Thwimp: I think I'll take several of these!
Huckit Crab: Its clamp moves, it's the only little character apart from the Maskaches and Helicopter Maskache that can move an arm.
Fly Guy: Similar to Shy Guy except for the small propeller hat. His face is identical and his arms move the same way too.
Para-Beetle: I think I can imagine 3 of them at different heights to jump like on steps to reach a secret level.
Parachute Goomba: they are almost harmless unless you have several of them jumping to Super Mario at the same time. It is nice to use other bricks used for flowers, but I am for and against at the same time. My son didn't notice, but I wish all cables were attached to the top of the parachute.
Foo: In terms of gameplay, I really like the glass that comes down, it's very handy when Mario wants to jump behind the character's back.
Spiny Cheep Cheep: In terms of gameplay, I really like the descending window, which is very useful when Mario wants to jump behind the character's back.

Chain Chomp is guarding the place
" There is the yellow and orange creature (Bramball) that I didn't encounter when I was younger, but I do recognize the Chain Chomp! This famous dog-prison ball that sleeps until you get too close and who pulls its chain while barking! How many times have I jumped when that happened!? Every single time!
The funny thing is that my 3 year old son instantly liked the Chain Chomp, for him it's a dog with a leash (not a chain) in the Super Mario universe! He absolutely wanted to put its white brick teeth on it. He couldn't wait to play with it and he found the waiting time long (it took me 50 minutes to build the 160 pieces).
As for the bricks, I really liked the soft thorny vine; it was the first time I'd ever come across it. As with many Super Mario sets, what I appreciate the most is the inventiveness that allows us to play with the constructed set. The principle of the two superimposed seesaws works perfectly. We all know that Chain Chomp is a ball that should be round, but because it isn't, it reveals its barcode as soon as you manage to flip it over.
There's also something else that I really liked about Chain Chomp, which is a reflection of the video game : Super Mario loses a life as soon as the chained Chomp closes its jaw on him, this principle has also become LEGO with the red color of its tongue! I tip my hat to the design and R&D team because without adding anything, the color red is the softened equivalent of losing a life.
If I had to add a single brick, it would be on top of the Chain Chomp, it would be smooth. This is also the opinion of my son who asked me why the holes on the top. "

Bigger than baby shark!
" #40341 is all about the sea. I bought it, so which bait did I bite? The shark because we didn't have one!
Turns out that it's our first blue fish, all the ones we have are colored grey. It's our first barrel too, and our first shell, etc..
We usually don't have half of the bricks from any Xtra polybag, so it's a good addition. Sometimes, you only need to add a little something to your setting. "

Grass is always greener on your side of the fence!
" The 853842 contains two double-sided printed panels with a different image on each side, as well as some bricks and a red snake. What I like about it is that it's modular; you can buy the other sets and put them next to it. It's not an essential set, but it's an interesting complement. It adds a touch of realism to our sets.
The product is made of thick cardboard, but it can still be affected by the humidity of your home and end up bending a little (like it did for us). It has a normal life cycle like all cardboard products. It can deteriorate over time (wear and tear, have a rounded corner if dropped, avoid eating and drinking next to it), if it becomes too worn, at least it can be sent for recycling. "

" 70436 has a very large box, surprisingly, no Spencer in it, but a new character named Teevee.
Building everything took me 4 hours 50 minutes spaced during 3 weeks. My young son didn't help whit this one, but he jumped on it when I told him that it was built.
I would qualify the building experience as more advanced. Part of the challenge is a bit due to the fact that I couldn't foresee the next building step; it was more like ''ok, what I am doing?!''. LEGO did come up with many interesting building techniques and bricks.
The other part of the challenge was with bag #5. I would recommend that you open the instructions on your computer. The paper instructions may leave you a bit unsure about where to put your brick.
What about the playability? I would rate it 5 stars on a 5 stars level.
Nehmaar Reem - the harbringer is really huge if you put it next to any minifigure. It is not a minifigure, thus I don't think you can scan him as a ghost with the app. I tried, and it didn't work. By the way, my wife called him Smors (a mix in between the chocolate and a marshmallow head).

I recently watched the short episodes of Hidden Side online and I understand more the story. No wonder Lady E was the toughest opponent I faced on the app. But I haven't seen any clue about Teevee.
Teevee can sit on top of the mech/exosuit and it looks like a robot with a funny head. My son really didn't want Teevee sitting on top, I think it's not looking has good.:)
About the mech/exosuit, make sure that you really pushed the arms and otherwise it won't stand well. "

Happy 'Moo' Year 2021
" The box has been on a table since the last two weeks. I wasn't too sure about building it, keeping for later or giving it to someone else. But today my son took it and asked me to build it. My 3 years old helped me a lot by picking up bricks and building them on top of others.
How was our building experience? Really good and fun.
It is a small box and there is lots of tiny bricks. The instructions start with the body, followed by the tail, legs, arms, head and the pasture at the very end. It took us 40 minutes to have this articulated (tail, legs, arms head, ears) ox.
There is an other out of the ordinary product inside the box: an almost square shape envelope. On the front, 2021 is printed in shining gold and on the back the ox is printed the same way. The ox on the front is embossed and a red brick on the back is embossed too.
I will keep an eye open for next year's model. It is definitely charming. The playability factor is present and has an enormous potential with any young children: having 3 or 4 different models result in many possible stories with animals being the main characters.
